Have just updated my GIGABYTE EX58-UD5 mobo from BIOS version F9E to F13 and have noticed the new BIOS is only listing 4096MB of RAM when it should be 6144MB, also the system now doesnt POST displays the message 'Detecting DRAM Size...." and then will restart, will do this 3-4 times and then actually boot into Windows. I have tried to reseat the RAM but has no effect. Also CPU-Z however does show that i have 6144MB of RAM, any ideas?

no try reseating the cooler heatsink before you do that check each stick of ram one at a time to make sure one hasnt gone faulty

Do you mean the CPU heatsink? Well i actually have a Corsair H50 so not actually a heatsink as such. How would having the heatsink too tight effect my memory not showing up in the BIOS?.

Have actually gone back one BIOS FW from F13 to F12 as F13 is regarded as not very stable, however F12 is still only showing 4096MB of memory but does show 3 channels for the RAM timing settings, so its must be detecting 3 sticks?. CPU-Z reports 6144MB so maybe its a BIOS error?

f12 is the best bios

did you test one ram stick in one white slot at a time? repeat the test with each white ram slot till you find the stick or slot that wont boot into windows

it will boot from any white slot with just one ram stock installed if its working

yes i mean cpu heat sink been to tight it was a common occurance with i7 1366 socket something to do with memory controller

Ah ok, if this is the problem, would CPU-Z still show 6GB of Memory though?.

How do i know how much to slacken the 4 screws of the H50 of by, as i dont want the CPU too lose

just loosen slightly have you checked each stick of ram in all the white slots yet id do that first make sure its not faulty ram

I shall try each ram stick in a white slot. If there was a faulty ram stick then it would show up in CPU-Z would it?

always go off what the bios says,if it says your missing some memory then chances are you are,cpu-z wont be as accurate

look in pc system properties,if its saying 6gb(4gb usable) then theres a problem

Ok I'll try 1 stick at a time tonight. I take it I should set my bios back to default setting (not OC'd)?.

it doesnt matter, test each stick and each white slot one by one till you come across the stick/slot that wont boot you into windows

have you removed the cpu by anychance since the troubles began? if not then dont remove it

bent cpu socket pins can cause missing memory aswell as an overtightened cpu heatsink or motherboard flexing

Ok have tested all the sticks or ram in all the white slots, and all the sticks work fine but the problem lies with the white ram slot nearest the CPU!, the PC won't boot when a stick is in that slot!!. I have applied new paste and reseated the H50 cooler this weekend, could that be the source of the problem?

Yeah tried that and it didnt help. I then took the H50 cooler off and removed the cpu itself to see if i could see any bent pins everything looked fine. Applied new thermal paste and replaced the H50 cooler, and it appears to be show 6Gb of ram now...not sure what was wrong!?

But have now noticed that the CPU being at 100% usage problem has come back again. Im not sure if this is releated to have 6GB of memory being detected again or not

Hmm, i might try that again then to see if it fixes this 100% cpu usage all the time, even though the processes tab in task manager doesnt show any programs using any of the cpu cycles
