Hello folks,

Not been on here in a long time, lost touch with my inner nerd and gaming for a while :p

So, I recently started gaming again after a year or so away, I say gaming but right now I'm only interested in playing "Squad" or the upcoming "Post Scriptum".

I had my PC on for about an hour the other day, only half of that time was spent in game, and after thirty minutes of Squad, my screen turned purple and a big cloud of smoke rose from under my desk and I got that horrible smell! :(

I immediately unplugged all the electrics, whipped the side of my case off, and found my Gigabyte G1 980 TI graphics card smouldering, smoking, hissing and spitting small bits of metal at me!

It's covered by a large metal plate so I can't see the extent of the damage but I'm assuming its toast.

I wasn't sure I'd get an RMA because I couldn't find my receipt, but luckily some hero at OCUK managed to find my order based on the description of items and rough date, and emailed me my invoice from two and a half years ago, so thank you that man!

I just wanted to ask if anyone knows how lightly I am to get a replacement, or how good Gigabyte are at dealing with RMA's?

I've never had to RMA anything before, and this was the single most expensive piece of computer hardware I've ever brought (Around £600 at the time). So to say I'm gutted is an understatement.

Its been treated well, never overclocked or exposed to very high temperatures. Was brought in November 2015 so should still be under warranty?

I've also read that they sometimes take up to a month to reply, and that there's a Gigabyte rep on here that could give his thoughts on what might happen?

@GIGA-Man I believe.

Cheers,
Dom.

I think Gigabyte has 3 years warranty. I think it is 3 years from the day of purchase if with proof of purchase, or if without it would be based upon the manufacturer date implied by the serial number of the card.

I think if GIGA-Man see your post, he would definitely look into your situation and see if there's anything can be done about it, as he's been quite helpful in helping members in the pass.

I have never had a problem with Gigabyte. I normally just contact them and they authorise a return, just requesting an email containing the original invoice, which OCUK can supply.
I am not a Gigabyte employee but I would imaging that it depends on what's wrong as to whether they replace or repair. If a simgle capacitor has burnt out, which can happen, and if there is no further damage to the PCB then they will attempt a repair, but if the damage is just too extensive or too difficult to repair then they will replace it with a reconditioned card.

My experince is not good however many here have had great experince and giga man has always helped.

Perfect time for it to die though it may mean you end up with a 1070

Thanks for the replies chaps,

Just trying to find out what to expect from Gigabyte.

The purchase date was November 2015 and I think my card was only released in June of 2015, so either way, if the warranty is three years I should be covered. I also do have the proof of purchase now (invoice).

My first thought was a capacitor had blown, but there was an awful lot of smoke, stunk my whole house out!

I've just had a reply from gigabyte and been given an RMA number, but it states "This RMA number is for fix or repair only", which doesn't fill me with confidence as I'm pretty sure its beyond repair. I was under the impression the only reason they wouldn't replace it is if there was no proof of purchase or it's outside of the warranty date, but I have proof of purchase and it should still be within the warranty period.

A friend of mine also said I could end up with a 1070, now that would be nice!

I'm gonna get it sent off first thing tomorrow, so fingers crossed

I'd imagine it's always fix and repair as they couldn't say replacement in advance and when they receive it it's easily repairable.

If it's ****** then they will replace it for sure as you're in warranty.

Hello D3MON1C,

Sorry to here you had that problem, the card should be covered by warranty still. If you e-mail [email protected] and include the card serial number and a scan of the invoice you got back from OCUK I will make sue it gets processed for you. Let them know in the e-mail that you talked to me too and I will let them know to expect your e-mail.

don't rate gigabyte much based on past experience.
many moons ago had to RMA a 460gtx 1gb with 256bit bus.
got a 768mb card back with 192bit bus....

did get them to replace it when I pointed it out, but RMA + RMA of an RMA completely put me off them.

I think they say its only for fix or repair because they send a refurbed card back always?

could have been your psu frying everything, you can test with onboard graphics?

Hello all,

The VGA card going like that should not have damaged anything else as it should remain isolated to the card (so it should not damage anything else). In regards to our RMA process, we have a stock of buffer products. These are not refurbed units, we will try and fix any product under RMA and if we cannot fix it we will replace it with a unit from our buffer stock held specifically for RMA. Any units that cannot be fixed will then be sent back to HQ where they will be broken down into the component parts and recycled.
