I have the four banks filled with two different brands and two different speeds but I might replace the four with two 8GB modules in dual channel.

Bought 8GB modules for my Intel rig and seems good memory, XMP but would the same memory work in the AMD machine? I was looking at HX316C9SRK2/16. Or I could get 2x4GB modules to save money as it's only just a regular PC not gaming.

So long as you have the identical pairs of each on their own channel they should still run in dual channel mode. I can't see any point in spending money on a old motherboard just to free up a pair of ram slots. It's highly unlikely to give any performance boost. Have you tried matching up the speeds and timings of the four sticks that you have manually in the bios?
