Gigabyte GA-EX58A-UD3R Squealing Sound! Enough for an RMA?

Hi Guys,

Just wondering what you make of this issue. I purchased a Gigabyte GA-EX58A-UD3R a while back and ever since when transferring files I get a squealing screechy type sound coming from the board. I assume it is cap squeal, although there are other causes for this sort of problem from what I've read.

I've switched the motherboard and the noise goes away, so I'm fairly certain it is that or the power supply. I've not ruled out the power supply but as it didn't happen before I got this new UD3R I think it is a safe bet. I will of course try another supply before attempting an RMA. There are no traditional mechanical HDDs in the system just SSDs and I have tried using a standard hard drive as well to rule the SSDs out and it still happens.

Anyways here is a sound recording, it isn't great as the mic is picking up the stock Intel HSF and you may have to turn the volume up but let me know what you think: Download Here.

So is this enough for an RMA? I know many of you may think it isn't a big deal but I even over fairly loud HSF I can hear it clearly and it is quite an offensive annoying sound to have happening all the time.

Thanks,

Mark

Check for a BIOS update, I did and it vanished.

I also bought a new sound card as it was coming over the speakers. Get much better sound quality than the onboard (Xonar D2X)

Ah yes, good call I did see something for my UD5s with regards to sound so I'll take a look.

There is also a forum where the latest and greatest BIOS are released to, theres a link in a X58A thread somewhere . . ..

Trust mail me if you find it, as I can't see it in the search.

Edit: According to CPU-Z I'm running F6 which is the latest stable BIOS (Can't reboot yet as I'm doing a huge transfer). There is a beta BIOS (F7f) but according to the decription all it does is "Improve SSD compatibility".

I would still try the beta bios as you have nothing else to lose as you're on a hiding to nothing I fear.

The noise is unlikely to go away IMO as it is normally due to the capacitors whining due to the voltages presented on them (they are at resonant frequency). A bios change will not alter the supply rail voltages to the caps as that is determined by the hardware of the voltage regulators. Therefore if the noise is unacceptable, I would speak to overclockers and see if they could accept an RMA, as although the board is functional, it is not what is expected from a high end manufacturer and caps whining is clearly a design issue.

Whopps forgot about this thread, but I did flash to the latest beta bios on Friday and it appears to have fixed the the problem, which is very strange like you say.

Thanks PhillyDee for suggesting it btw! I would have never thought that it could solve such a problem.

Thats just it, it does. A BIOS update was released for just this issue. It reduced it in some, and got rid of it in others. Mine was the same, it got rid of it compeltely.

Strangely though it doesn't actually list it as one of the faults it fixes, just improves SSD compatibility according to the Gigabyte website.

Odd, I remember seeing one, but I think it was on another forum where they release the beta BIOS. The official website takes a long time to update!

Hi, it is very very unlikely to be the caps that are making the noise, and far far more likely to be the coils. This can easily fixed with hot glue.

I had the same problem with my board. I remember from what I read on the internet that it's a common issue with these boards.

I adjusted something in my bios and it went away, I'm not on my PC at the moment so I'll post back later if I can remember what it was.
