I am trying to get as much information as I can on building my new system. So far I have had an excellent responce from everyone on the forums regarding various parts of the system, thankyou :) Now it comes to the motherboard. I am interested in going for the Gigabyte GA_P35_DS4 motherboard. But having done a little research on it I am a little worried about the fitting of a good air CPU cooler. The fact this board comes fitted with this copper heatpipe thingy  ? (Please excuse my knowledge) has prompted me to post this thread, because some people are having to bend bits to make their CPU coolers fit when using this motherboard because of the heatpipe. Now with me spending over £1100 on my new parts I dont fancy the prospect of bending bits. So what is the best air CPU cooler you can use on this motherboard without modding bending or in my case breaking anything to get it to fit. The coolers I would like are -

Zalman CNPS9700-LED Aero Flower

Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Heatsink

Do any of these coolers fit nicely with the GigabyteGA_P35_DS4 motherboard ? Or are there any other good CPU coolers that would suit better ?All comments are very much comments appreciated. :)

I have found another small thread on the forum that will help me. From what I can see the Thermalright Ultra-120 and the Tuniq both fit. I should have looked a little harder on the forum I guess.

Thanks

Hi there,
Thanks for answering my question for me too. I am also interested in that MB. I want it because the DS3P P35 Gigabyte board does not have firewire on board and video editing is one my big PC tasks. I don't want to start buying PCI firewire cards for a brand new build if I can help it ;)

What is the rest of your spec?

Cheers, Steve

I have the DS3P P35 gigabyte board and it does have onboard IEEE 1394 firewire interface.

I fitted a arctic cooling freezer pro 7 to mine and it's tight with a 1mm gap between the pro 7 and the extra large NB heatsink. The NB heatsink is impressive, it even has a low profile heatsinkon the reverse side of the board, not seen that before.

i got a P35 DS4 (cool mobo)
and i have fitted a Scythe Infinity Heatpipe it touches the on board heatsinks
i just bent up a few fins on the Scythe Infinity and it running great ..

I am in the process of a complete rebuild. I almost have enough money to buy everything I need. I will be able to get all the components by early September (when I get paid at the end of the month :D ) The new system will be -

700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply
Gigabyte GA P35-DS4 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, 3.0 GHz, 1333MHz FSB
2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400
GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3
Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB
Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Heatsink
Akasa Eclipse 62 or Silverstone TJ09B-W

Now that I know the Thermalright Ultra-120 will fit well with the DS4 I have read some excellent reviews on this CPU cooler, so thats the one I will go for. :) This is the thread I found on the forum that says the Thermalright Ultra will fit.

I went for the Zalman 9700NT, I know its not the best of the best, but it was available, and I know for deffo that it fits.

Ian watch out a lot of the Thermalright Ultra 120's are coming with convex bases that need hours of lapping, have a look at the Noctua cooler on OcUK.

Also i really would consider a Quad core CPU, you will be regretting the dual core when UT3 and Crysis come out.

My 2p worth.

thermy ultra 120 extreme with a 120mm noctua/scythe fan wont fit properly due to the fan wont fit inbetween the cooler and the chipset heatblock, BUT what i did was use a hacksaw to cut of the corner plastic of the noctua 120mm fan and then it works fine:). dont bother with the zalman.

Thanks guys, some excellent information there :) . I also found out that the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro will fit to the DS4 with no problems at all. I know there are many people that use the freezer 7 pro and are very happy with it, so another one to consider for sure :)

Clocka - Nice bit of D.I.Y with the hacksaw, but not something I relish :D

Masterk - Thanks for the warning on the Thermalright ultra. Also I have been undecided about going for quad core. It is a choice between the Q6600 and the Duo core E6850, one of the reasons for my rebuild is to get FSX running as best I can and of course Crysis. Now from what I know, an overclocked E6850 will out perform a Q6600, and also is the Q6600 harder to overclock because its heat ? Can you get 3.0GHZ by overclocking a Q6600 on air without any problems ? FSX also needs more GHZ on the CPU. Sorry to stray away from the main subject here. Please correct me if I am wrong. :)

A Q6600 will do 3ghz on air quite easily with a decent cooler it seems by browsing the CPU forum, in a lot of apps the 6850 will slightly outperform the Q6600, but as soon as multicore apps start taking hold the Q6600 will have a massive performance gain over the 6850. At the end of the day its your money, but thats my recommendation.
