Gigabyte GTX970 G1 custom Bios issue

Hi All,

Flashed my pair of Gigabyte GTX970 G1's with the custom Bios off the overclock forum, but not entirely convinced it's working properly.

I'm having artefact issues even at relatively low overclocks and some issues in game even at stock settings (well, overclocked stock as per the custom bios, but still lower than stable overclock I achieved with the standard bios).

I think I'm going to go back to the standard Gigabyte bios and trying editing it myself to tweak setting. Only issue is that I now don't have a copy of the original Gigabyte bios (doh...).

So is there anyone who could point me in the direction of the stock bios for these cards?

All help appreciated!

I would like to just say if you are going to do any flashing of a GPU bios, ALWAYS back up your old one. and make damn sure you know what you are doing! I have seen people brick their cards so easily -.-

yep, first thing I did when flashing or tweaking BIOS is save the untouched original. even if it was already available for download on the interwebz.

Odd that you had issues with a custom bios at low clocks, many are running it fine.. Perhaps it doesn't like the extra heat? Or it's not compatible with your s/n

No idea :(

If you don't get a bios you can have my stock one tomorrow

i had the same issue, absolutely crap overclocks on it, would artifact at 1480, i also went to tech power up for the bios

To be honest I normally would too, one of those situations where I just blindly followed the howto without really paying attention to the fact that it didn't mention any backup of existing bios...... I did realise it wasn't exactly my cleverest move as soon as I realised it was struggling...

Hopefully the standard Gigabyte bios or a different custom one might do the job.

In theory my card/s should be reasonable overclockers. The one that is currently installed has a 74.3 asics which I understand to be fairly good? I haven't got both in at once as they aren't exactly happy in sli on air as one of the cards starts to overheat. So I'm running just the one until my water blocks arrive and I can sort it all out properly.

Thanks for the help all!

Hi Neil,

I don't suppose you'd be happy sending me your custom bios to have a look at? I'm currently comparing stock bios to the game stable custom one I have been running and will try a tweaked version of the stock with core and memory speeds from the custom.

Wish me luck!

Hi All,

One thing that was a bit odd, when flashing both the custom and the original bios I had the warning:

Warning: Firmware image PCI Subsystem ID (1458.367A)
does not match adapter PCI Subsystem ID (1458.366F)

I used the -6 switch and the flash completed, but wonder if this is part of the issue?

Any thoughts?

Just making sure you are using MSI Afterburner and putting power limit & volts to max on the slider? :)

Hi Neil,

Thanks for responding. Yup, got voltage and power limit sliders maxed and using afterburner.

I have been playing with editing the gigabyte standard bios as there's a couple of things that may be different. for instance in the notes for the custom bios it mentions voltage changes on 6 pin Rail 1 and 6 pin Rail 2, whereas the G1 has a 6 pin and an 8 pin. No idea if this is something that should be different, it just strikes me as odd.

I may have another crack at the custom bios, and see if I can get it stable.

Good luck!

If you're around tomorrow eve, I'll upload my default bios and custom bios for you to have a looksie

Well still seems a little off here. just tried playing CS GO on custom bios stock settings and it basically appears as if the gfx driver is crashing/ halting for a fraction of a second every now and again. Screen sort of freezes and then goes black for about half a second then comes back and carries on.

Also a little odd and unstable in 3Dmark 11 and valley. Funny artefacts and just a bit lurchy. It runs smoothly then every now again again just sort of sticks a bit, similar to CSGO.

I'd be most grateful if you're happy to drop me a copy of your roms. Not sure what's going on here, but some things not right. I really need to chuck the second card in and run that for a while just to confirm its definitely a problem with the bios, or whether I might have a hardware issue on one of these cards.

Problem is that I haven't really had a chance to properly test these cards as such. I have one installed on air and have done some benching, but haven't really been able to run them properly in game yet as I was waiting for the water blocks to arrive from EK. Got an email Friday to say earliest stock they will have is now the 12th.... at this rate I'll be lucky to get them before Christmas....

Ho hum..

Hmm sounds more like a hardware issue to me...

If MSI afterburner is showing atleast 1450 on the core / 3500+ on the memory while running a game with volts maxing out at 1.275 then it's working. Just make sure you are using the gamestable bios and not the no limit bios as that will cause you grief

i also had this issue, the original bios actually gave me better clocks lol

Thanks all (especially Neil for uploading the roms!)

Going to have another crack at it this evening.

Fingers crossed!
