i have been planning to upgrade my ram, as the first part. (some say its unnessisarry buy hey..its an upgrade)

however i have read this
"Because of chipset limitations, when using FSB 1333 MHz CPU with populating
all DIMM sockets, memory frequency will be reduced from the original, and
system instability or incorrect detection of memory module may be occur."

"Because of chipset limitations, do not populate both DIMM sockets of the
same channel (e.g. DDRII1 and DDRII2), or populate 4 DIMM sockets with
double-sided memory modules to prevent system's failure to start or
incorrect detection of memory modules."

i am planning to upgrade to this DDR2-1066

would this be compatible, and also how do i change the memory frequency in BIOS?

I'd upgrade your motherboard first, to some P45 board or something

Are you planing to do it one item at a time? If so, then P45, then cpu, ram, graphics, hard drive

i am not planning on upgrading much to be honest, i dont need tonnes of power.

just doing RAM, PSU and GRAPHICS. and maybe a quad socket 775 later

i have not got the time to reinstall windows, and installing programs again is just oo time consuming so motherboard is out of the question.

just compatability that is holding me back

Fair enough, my mum's pc is still a P31, it's got 4gb in it, but Windows only sees 3.5 (probably to do with what you're posted)

i am pritty sure that it will only see 3.5 because of a 32 bit operating system, i am using 64bit windows 7 pro, mine will see all 4.

that is if it will work

anyone got any experience with this board?

No, it's 64 bit.

The P31 is pretty picky when it comes to 4gb (4gb is the max it can see)

That's why I suggested a board upgrade first, you'll get a performance boost just by jumping to P45.

I had the same board with that ram, ran fine no problems and overclocked my e8400 to 3.8ghz.

I have just got a P45 so i can use 8gb as the P31 DS3L is limited to 4gb.

Had the same board and chip at one time with close to the same ram and just ended up selling my 2g and getting the 2x2g sticks. You do not need more than 4 anyway for general use/gaming. That being said I would still get the AM3 bundle for a overall faster comp and sell your old kit. I sold that exact board/cpu and close to the same ram for a decent amount and paid for half of my upgrade.

While reinstalling windows can be a hassle if ya part your hard drives right and just have your c drive for windows install/small progs its really only an hour or two ordeal from start to finish. I try to reformat a couple times a year just to clean the crap out and speed windows back up.
