Gigabyte P55 UD5 waterblock problem.

Have torn apart my case fitted my radiator and was about to fit my waterblock (EK Supreme HF) when i was greeted with this at the back



Making fitting the backplate pretty much impossible am i right?, i forgot there was this metal back on 1156.

How is the backplate meant to sit evenly?.

Am I right in thnkning then that the 1156 does not normally come with a metal backplate on the mobo? It therefore looks similar to a 1366 mobo, where the gasket is not used and standoffs bridge the gap. If the problem is that the EK plate is not sitting level on the mobo plate due to the raised screwheads in the existing plate contacting the EK plate then I would take a dremel or a drill to the EK plate to make a recess so it will sit flat on the mobo plate, then fit it in the same way as the 1366, assuming the standoffs are the correct thickness.

Aye, used a dremel to cut the longer one down all sorted now. pic in a min.

Also had to dremel a bit of the case around the socket as well, didn't even try to make it neat, it's a mess but will never be seen.
 
Did you take a dremel to the backplate or to the screws? If the screw, I hope you cut it down far from the motherboard. Steel dust isn't what you want in a computer.

If you've hacked up the case enough that you can take the backplate off without removing the motherboard, good call. I've been meaning to get around to that for ages now.

On second thoughts, I'm not sure I'm using standoffs with an x58 board, the backplate is pressed up against the cpu bracket. That might be a mistake, but it's working well enough if so.
 
On the X58 the EK plate is supposed to sit in contact with the mobo plate and the standoffs should be the same thickness as the mobo backplate such that when the nuts are tightened the mobo is not tempted to warp as it tries to pull itself towards the EK plate since the standoff is there to fill the gap. I think these boards can deal with a certain amount of flexing though, so if its working ok I doubt any damage has been done, and I doubt it significantly interferes with getting an optimum contact between block and cpu, its just solid mechanics afterall.
 
Yeah ive cut away more of the opening to get the backplate on and off easier, didn't use the standoffs just dremeled that longer screw down to the size of the others and whacked on the backplate with washers, seem sto be fine although two cores are around 4-5 higher than the other two but still good temps.

I just taped around the cutout on the back to stop dust getting through and dremeld it then got old henry hoover out :p worked fine.
