Gigabyte Problems Crossing too many BIOS versions in one go?

I'm builing a PC for my brother out of spare parts. I have a Gigabyte P35C-DS3R that I picked up cheap (bent cpu pin but works fine). I was just going to flash it to the most recent BIOS (F12) but just scanning the documentation it says:

With Q-Flash™ utility, please do not cross too many BIOS versions at one time if
your current BIOS version is rather old. For example, do not cross from F1 to
F12, but to flash from F1 to F4 and F4 to F8 and so on.

I've always upgraded BIOSs incrementally on my own board, F1 to F2 to F4 etc.) so this hasn't been an issue but I have had at least one inexplicable bad BIOS flash that I would rather avoid by keeping BIOS flashes to a minimum. Is it really necessary to flash to F4 and then to F8 and then again to F12? Why is there a problem going straight to F12?

Cheers.
