Gigabyte x58a ud3r high pitched modem type noise

Coil whine or capacitor squeal. Caused by either graphics card, PSU or motherboard. Very common problem. Many threads on this. Nothing you can do apart from trying different clock speed settings or changing parts.
 
Hi, thanks for the quick replies. The bios is pretty much as overclockers sent it to me. I am 100% sure that the sound is coming from the motherboard. How do I know if speedstep is enabled? Sorry, but my knowledge is pretty limited I'm afraid.
 
Its capacitor whine, apart from changing clocks and voltages, you may just have to live with it. Its quite common. Mine does it when accessing the SSD, and when scrolling on the mouse, moving the mouse pointer etc. I am currently running with the side off as I keep meaning to change some fans over before I put it back on.
 
There is no way I can live with it, it's driving me mad :). Do other motherboards with this chipset have the same problem?

From what I've seen, some models of components are more pre-disposed to making this sound than others, but there's rarely any guarantee. If you really can't deal with it, sell the motherboard and buy a new one. The noise doesn't mean there's necessarily anything wrong with the board itself, so you can sell it as working perfectly. I've sold on a fair few pieces of kit that have had this problem and never had any complaints... as well as an individual's hearing, it depends on where their PC is, what other noises it makes, and also what other parts they have.

Or you could just leave it a while and see if it gets better... I had a 4870X2 that made this noise and it got better over time.
 
TURN OFF SPEEDSTEP - that is what it is

problem solved.

edit: EIST in the bios from memory.

edit 2: you *may* also need to turn off C1E too.

Yes I agree everything seems to be working fine. I only received it yesterday so I would return rather than sell it on. :) I have never experienced this before and the pc is in the lounge so it is getting annoying as you can hear it over everything :(

none at all - have you double checked the BIOS? - no chance you didn't save the settings or something? this is a common issue and the above steps have been the solution for everyone that i have heard about including me.
 
yes, I have checked and double checked and the settings are still disabled. The bios version is FA and it is a revision 2 motherboard.
 
take your Psu out of case, then lie it next to System (fan upwards) run system and do Usual tests , and put your ears next to Psu, Do you hear a Squeal ?

would be good if you listed your System specs. :)
 
change the power profile to best performance (and check the CPU is set not to slow), maybe its forcing the cpu into power save mode, however I would ahve thought changing the bios would stop it happing...
