Gigabyte x99 SLI RAM issue

Hey guys I'll get straight to the point.

Mobo = Gigabyte x99 SLI
RAM = Kingston Fury 4X4gb 2400Mhz

Recently built my first gaming pc and I put my RAM sticks in slot 1,2,3,4 and after letting people know I had completed my build in a different thread on the forums someone pointed out that if I slot the sticks into 1,3,5,7 it will enable quad channel RAM.

So that's exactly what I did, got home took the RAM out and placed them into the GREY slots on the board. Booted it up and went on to load Win10 but was lagging and then eventually froze altogether. So tried to boot again and it would just freeze while loading Win10.

After all this I just put the RAM sticks back into slots 1,2,3,4 and everything booted up fine no issues at all so restarted and loaded the XMP.

So I'm guessing I only have dual channel? But when I open up CPU-Z it says that it's in quad channel.

- Any ideas on why it kept freezing and then making me press restart button on the Case?

- and if CPU-Z is showing the memory as running Quad Channel, is it?

I'm just a little bit confused and obviously I want to get the most out of my build I've been playing BF4, CS:GO and fallout 4 and everything runs fine not had any freezes or lagging while the RAM is located in slots 1,2,3,4.

Anyone more knowledgeable that can shed some light on this will be of great help, or even just able to put my mind at rest.

Thanks in advance.

Alex.

I have been having similar problems and have installed in the correct slots. I started a thread here: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18698406 because I thought it was the motherboard. I did have other issues too so I RMA'd the motherboard the freezing and BSOD are still there. I have the same board with the 5820k CPU and Hyperx fury 2400 ram. Normal settings in the BIOS and its the latest BIOS too.

Guess what....... I'm going to try the ram in 123 and 4 tomorrow to see what happens and I'll report back.

Did you manage to try the RAM in slots 1,2,3,4?

I just don't understand how in CPU-Z it shows it as quad channel. When I am back from work I'll grab a screenshot of it.

I have not tried it yet. Late last night I swapped my SSD from the 250 EVO to a 250 Crucial; did a fresh win7 install and then upgraded to windows 10. Since this my rig has run trouble free and as smooth as silk so I daren't change anything at the moment. :eek:

Of course now I have said this I dare say it will all go Pete Tongue again shortly :rolleyes:

You got the RAM in slots 1,3,5,7 then and everything going fine?

I'll be upgrading to a 1TB Samsung EVO SSD soon and will fresh install Win10 then so at the same time I'll try the sticks in the so called quad channel slots.

I knew I was tempting fate, as soon as I sent my last reply the darned thing froze again :mad:

I know have the ram in 1234 and it seems to be stable........ god only knows what's going on... I'll leave as is and let you know if I suffer any problems.

Yeah I have no idea why this is! Strange. I've been tempted to get in touch with gigabyt and see if they have had a few reports of this. Check CPU-Z and see if it says it's running quad channel.

Yes its running quad core and I have sent a tech support message to Gigabyte. I have also spoken to OCUK Tech support and they have suggested running Prime95 to test the CPU which I will do now.

I'm not familiar with primers. What could it possibly show that maybe causing the issue? I'll have a go at it myself as well. See if we get same results.

I do find it odd though that it shows up as quad channel when if you look at the manual and I'm sure others will agree that it's in the dual channel slots?

Hmmm

I have down loaded prime 95 but I'm damned if I can understand it lol. Its to test the cpu to see if its faulty?

I'm damned if I can figure it out and its crazy, strange that we both have the same spec and problems though!

Yeah it's strange to say the least. Bit concerned as well but it's been absolutely fine in the first 4 slots. No crashes no nothing and if there isn't a noticeable performance loss from dual channel and quad channel I'm not to bothered but I would like it to work how it's meant to. Keep posting with updates and I'll try a few things as well.

I have noticed that some of my stuff is running very slowly. For example CC Cleaner took several seconds to open when normally its almost instant. I swapped the memory back to the manual settings (1,3,5&7) and CC Cleaner opens instantly again?

Another thing I noted is that the RAM was much hotter than normal which concerns me so I am going to stick with the manuals suggested settings for now and wait to see what the Gigabyte request for support has to say. I will of course add their response to the thread.

Yes very hot to the touch, hotter than usual anyway.

As I said previously I had gone back to 1,3,5 & 7 as the 1,2,3,4 set-up was very slow on some apps.
During the phase when it was set-up as 1,2,3,4 I noticed in the BIOS there was an option to set the RAM to XMP. Previously whilst using 1,3,5,7 the BIOS didn’t give me this option, just an option to set the RAM profile which when set to profile 1 was supposed to be XMP. However when I selected this option the PC wouldn’t boot but instead came up with an error screen insisting that I reset to default before it would boot!

Since setting to the new and previously unseen XMP setting during the time the RAM was in 1,2,3,4 and then re-setting the RAM back into 1,3,5,7 the whole thing has been stable. I checked the BIOS again and it’s still set at profile 1 but no separate option to select XMP but all seems to be well and the RAM is in XMP mode. The whole things is very bizarre.

like you have said before, it's strange we have the same issue. You''ll have to let me know what gigabyte say if they get back to you.
