I have a Gigabyte Z87-HD3 bought off a member on here.

I have a 2x4gb Corsair XMS3 kit, but the PC only recognises 4gb with both stick in.
With 1 stick in either slot it also has 4gb, yes I have tried both sticks in both slots. Its like the motherboard has a limit of 4gb. (Im on windows 10 64bit) and the old board saw 8gb.
Im using the Grey slots as per the manual (I think)

Any ideas?

That is strange. It was certainly working fine before I sent it to you, as I just replaced it after you said you wanted it. Up until that evening, it was running 4 x 4Gb sticks just fine.

When I first got it, I was running these: http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/khx24c11t2k2_8x.pdf

Then, about a couple months ago I swapped over to some Crucial Memory clocked at 1600 mhz bought off this thread: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/240gb-ssds-crucial-ddr3.18761559/#post-30341595

Now, both memories worked fine, although I only ran the Kingston memory at 1600 mhz (instead of 2400 mhz) the whole time that was installed. But I needed more memory, so went from 2x 4GB Kingston to 4x4Gb Crucial. Never had a problem with either configuration, and both were installed and that was that. Although I did have to restart the system once after installing the 4x4Gb. But then it showed up properly.

I'm not really a technical sort of person when it comes to PC's, although I do build my own. I'm not really overly clued up on the intricacies of RAM or Motherboards, lol.

But I'm sure there are people out there who can help more.

Some Pictures that might or might not help

Have you tried the black channels? I can't really remember what channel I used when I only ran 2 sticks. I'll see if I can find a pic... Found one from when I first built it. Looks a bit ropey, but I think I possibly used the black channels.

Regardless, it doesn't seem right, especially as I was using all 4 slots the day before.

I have three ideas.

1) bent pin in the cpu socket.

2) update boards bios

3) load optimised defaults in the BIOS in case some setting is making this happen, also disable integrated gfx.

Is a pin likely to be bent when removing a CPU? It was certainly working fine when I was using it just before packing it up. And I was careful to use the socket protector when sending it out. I'm not trying to wriggle out of anything here, lol. Just want to get to the bottom of what likely could have happened (if it was, indeed that).

I updated the BIOS recently. It's running F10 (IIRC), which is pretty recent.

Optimised defaults are probably a good place to start though. I was using integrated graphics until about the last 3 days I ran the board, when I installed an RX480.

Bent pin I dont know what could happen if one is bent, maybe one pin somehow affects the ram enough for it to be detected but unusable, CPU_Z certainly seems to confirm dual channel and not single.

edit - or dust/crud in the memory slot, did you try a single stick in each ram slot?

These are others. If I put in all 4 sticks it just hangs on main screen (Press DEL for BIOS F12 for Boot etc...).
Yes tried each slot
Heres a new one..... If I put in 3 sticks in shows as 8GB and runs fine???

Oh........ I think I have seen the issue....... Half of it is me, I was reading that as 2x4gb not 4x2gb!
So those 2 and the 4gb and I get 8GB which is right! I think I just have a duff memory stick then.
I think I win an award for biggest plonker! I will check this tho.

Ha ha ha. Big panic averted. I was worried something had happened to the board between going from me to you. Thankfully not. Phew.

Cheers mate. Sorry about that. I was sure it was a setting as it looked fine, had a glance over pins as always and all looked fine. I was checking memory slots like mad for dirt
