I used to ride a scooter before i passed my driving test for the car. The scooter in the title cost me £800 second hand and was and still is a tidy looking bike imo, it went pop on me last year and cost £400 to rebuild making the bike an almost total waste of money, but i needed to bike to get me to and from work.

The engine was fully rebuilt, new piston, new rings, new gaskets, new engine bearings, and recon'd crank.

I ran the bike in like i was supposed to and just after i had fully ran the bike in i passed my driving test and the bike was left at home on the farm in the yard for 7 months.

Two weeks ago a friend of mine brought a 16 year old lad round and said he wants a bike, how much do you want to sell it for..

I said £500 and i will be happy so i took a £400 cheque from him and was promissed the other £100 in two days time ( Pay day ) i trust this lad and he didnt thrash the bike at all from what ive been told. But two days after i sold it to him the engine has started making a severe rattling noise which i believe to be either the main engine bearings, or the big end bearing.

Being the nice / dumb guy that i am i gave him his money back and he is dropping the bike off tonight,

Im realy stuck as to what to do, IMO the bike is a dead loss. Getting it proffesionally rebuilt again will cost another £400 making the bike worthless. Or i could try and rebuild the bike myself which is going to be tricky removing every wire etc, the bike would new splitting in half ( Engine ) To do the bearings and i dont want to be wasting time,

Cheers Guys

There really isn't much to those little 2-strokes, I'd either open it up and have a go at rebuilding it or look on eBay for a whole new engine. You can use any of the Piaggio engines (Vespa, NRG, Typhoon 50), any of the Gilera engines (DNA, Runner, Ice etc) or any of the Aprilia engines. They are all owned by Piaggio and share the same or very similar engine. I think the only different one is the Vespa 50 which is a little more complicated but, shh secret, it's a bit more powerful.

Oh yeah, check the oil is getting through, that's the only thing that kills those 50's otherwise they should go on and on and on. Sounds like it's running dry to me.

She had plenty of oil running through her, ive had the head off and the piston and head look fine ( No chewed pieces of piston ring been hammering around )

The chap at the bike shop turned the oil up a fair bit because the bike broke last time due to lack of oil..

I might take it all apart this weekend. The engine side of it im not too bothered about. Its removing all the wiring to the back end that frightens me :(

I had an AR50 10 years ago and the main bearings cost £150 to replace.

I'd say if you dropped the engine out and took it to the garage it shouldn't cost that much.

Engine rebuilds are usually expensive because of the time it takes to remove the engine etc....

P.S is it still restricted?

Nope she isnt restricted, i would drop the back end off..

But its got lots of wiring going to it etc
