Hi there!

My girlfriend went into hospital Tuesday afternoon and was released earlier today, she informed her workplace that she was in hospital (through her mum because girlfriend was too ill)

Now she has found out that they have fired her saying that they need someone more reliable and who isn't sick all the time.

This was only her third week working there (that's what I'm worried about - them being able to do what they want after a little time) and she loved the job but now nothing.

What can be done? I'm going to give the CAB a ring tomorrow but she's obviously distressed.

Thanks :).

A bit harsh though. It's not like people plan to get ill. What if she had been in an accident, would they have still sacked her?

Sounds like they didn't really want her and have jumped on the chance to get rid.

She should get whatever pay is due to her but if she`s been off a lot in her first 3 weeks it doesnt really come across well no matter what job you are in.

This is the first time she has been off sick.

She was sent away from work on Tuesday afternoon because she was crying in pain, went to the doctors who referred her to the hospital where she was forced to stay for days after they did an LP on her which prevented her from being able to walk.

I'm not sure what her contract states, I will need to speak to her tomorrow morning in person. She was a bit of a mess on the phone.

I take it that was her only occasion of sickness ,may be worth her getting proof of her illness from the hospital and explaining to her manager that she knows it looks bad being sick in her first few weeks but it was a one off and could she have anther chance !
If that does not work she has now real rights after such a short period !

what kind of job are we talking about here?

Maybe the best thing is for her to just forget about it and move on tbh.

Barristers Clerk, working in a law firm.

If it was McDonalds then yes, but seeing as it was for a respectable law firm it's a bit more serious.

We're just not sure what to do, there was no indication of this whatsoever on Tuesday and now they drop this bombshell on her.

although its easy for me to say, if they lack understanding at this stage what to speak of the future, its probably in her best interest to move on, unfortunately its another cowboy employer or self obessed manager throwing their weight around...

What job is it, I started a new job, was in it for 2 weeks and broke my foot on a drunken night out. They kept me and paid me for the 6 weeks I had off!

edit/ just seen the barrister comment, I'd get advice from the CAB.

Yea that kinda sucks unfortunately in these kind of firms you get a lot of jerk offs who like to pretend they have significant power and it sounds like someone wanted to flex their muscles a bit and your gf happened to be in the firing line.

Tbh there is no good solution - kicking up a stir for the firm or the barrister will get her nowhere and even if by some miracle she forced her way back in she'd get a lot of hassle. Only option in my opinion is for her to request a private meeting and to try to explain herself

She hasn't worked there for more than a year, so she has pretty much no rights at all sadly.

Maybe she wasnt very good at her job and having time off within her 1st month was the cream on the cake.

I've not had a day off for the last 4 years, what illness did she have? A cold?

No rights at all, aslo with it being a law firm, bets are, they know the crack.

Can't hurt to phone CAB, but everyone always wants the person themselves to let someone in management know.

It wasn't a cold, do you think she would go to hospital for a cold?

They believed it to be Viral Meningitus, after a CT scan and a Lumber Puncture they referred her to a neurologist who has diagnosed it was a severe migraine.

After the Lumber Puncture was done she wasn't able to walk which is why she was forced to stay in hospital. Then the doctor's didn't even know she was still there because they don't talk to each other.

If she had the sniffles and stayed away then yeh I'd be ripping into her - but seeing as she was actually ill with the risk of it being meningitus (she had this last year) I think it is ridiculous.

She was good at her job, well liked and did everything she needed to and more.

Get the doctors to state she had an LP and the diagnosis, keep hounding, you'll get one.

Looks good on the CV thou :p
