Bit of a strange one this and i'm looking for some opinions, my gf has an advent ert2250 laptop with vista home premium installed.

At random times, it'll just cut out and shut down completely. Nothing in the event logs, no blue screens nowt. I thought it was a hardware problem, i even plugged in the charger and removed the battery and it still did it.

Phoned the customer care helpline and they advised me to completely reinstall vista to eliminate any software problems, it's been on for hours at a time (install was was 2 weeks ago) and it hasnt cut out once as yet.

Now is this normal with vista, if if gets the hump with a piece of software?

I've left it at it's default installation state for about two weeks, today installed itunes and a couple of small bits and i'm now waiting and watching.

What do you all think? This is annoying as anything!

Not to say that this is the exact problem or owt, but I encountered this a while back, and it turned out to be a compatibility issue with a driver i had installed. Got rid of it and updated to the latest possible version, been fine ever since.

Could the lappy be overheating, or even have a ram issue? It might be a good idea to install XP on it, if it has more than one partition just to see if you have similar effects there, but thats a bit too lengthy.

You could run Memtest x86 on the rig and do a good check on the ram?

wel within 10 mins of creating this thread, it's just cut out.

Things installed: dvd shrink, i tunes and some xp codecs.

I've taken dvd shrink and the xp codecs off, we wait and see.

I could try memtest, when i've needed that in the past i've i usually see blue screens first.

I've never seen windows power off a PC completely without an error screen first. My bets are on hardware issue.

It might be a good idea to do a fresh install and run memtest first, if that passes run Prime95 on the laptop. If something is awry and it is indeed a heat problem those tests will definitely make the problem occur quickly.

its a complete fresh install now, i'm using coretemp and the temps are around 50c. I really dont think it's an overheating issue.

I've just installed a couple of windows updates (graphics card, nic and system board) to see if that sorts the problem

I still recommend trying out memtest or Prime95, you may as well elminate the type of hardware issues they cause ..

well just an update, gf has been watching a lot of on demand tv shows and the laptop has been fine since i removed i tunes.

I've just installed her camera software, avg and it seems fine.

Has anyone heard of itunes killing vista? Are there any other itunes alternatives that like vista? :)
