hey

A friend of mine needs a laptop (her first laptop ever) and she wanted me to pick one for her - I dont have a clue what to get. Laptops arent really my thing

She needs it for work, email, music (burning/ipod) and internet surfing, and maybe watching movies every now and then.

She went to a shop and they showed her some sony vaio for 1800 which I of course told her not to get, but she liked that it was small and light. She also saw a mac book pro and that was 1000 but I convinced her to get a PC instead of a mac.

Now she'd like something girly and colourful, but small and slim, I'm thinking something 15" and maybe a Dell Studio so she can get bubblegum pink on it. Any other suggestions/Ideas?

p.s. she's extremely un-tech, I showed her how to setup an email account for the first time 4 years ago. To this day she doesnt have her own computer and never has so it needs to be something not overly complicated, just simple, stylish, girly and plenty for what she intends to do.

Thanks

Macbook standard, doesn't need to be the pro for what she wants it for. In white it's plenty girly, and fits the bill for everything she needs.

At risk of turning this thread into the usual "my OS is better than yours" thread, how come you swayed her over to PCs? OS X is a doddle to use, and I'd probably recommend it to a noob over Windows having now had some experience with it (i.e teaching the Mrs to use it!).

If you do go down the PC route, the Dells are good machines but not overly sure they're worth the money for the pretty colours. I have been impressed with Acer and Toshiba laptops of late, worth a look too.

well to be honest I swayed her towards PC because she's going to need a lot of help getting started so i can't help her if she picks a Mac as I won't know how to.

She shouldn't need to spend £750. She should easily get by for around £400. Remember - the tasks she carries out could be done on a VERY low end PC, she's not techy, so waiting is unlikely to bother her too much, and her main priority is appearance/mobility.

Random selection, but something like and Acer Aspire Timeline 4810TZ should be more than adequate so far as performance goes, slim, light, good battery life. Might want a larger screen, but this compromises mobility etc.

would look at something like Sony vaio e series or Samsung r530. both have i3 dual core cpus n integrated graphics n can be had for about 450-500 quid! agree with the above post that dells are prob not paying the extra for an exterior design.

If you look at spec alone, you could personalise a generic black unit later with a laptop skin transfer.

I've seen skin transfers around £4 in the stock-everything style budget stores, but not sure where to look for national stockists. First website I found was charging £15 for a pink and black jaguar skin.

I agree 750 is way too much money for what she wants to do with it
