Hello

Does anyone use gitzo tripods ?

Reason I ask is i need one, and also a head, but im a bit confused.

I want the best (budget : £500 for tripod, £400 for head) but i want to be able to do a lot of things, such as macro photography, portraits and club photography (this is main priority) and some 70-300mm long distance landscapes.

And i would prefer a tripod with out the collum below it, so one like this :

GT3530LSV_shop.jpg

Looking at the http://www.gitzo.com/cms/site/gitzo/home/products/tripods/systematic?code=GT3541XLS

Another requirement is I need the camera to be operable at a height of 2.03m as I am 6ft 8 and wish to stand to use it without ducking etc.

I also want a gitzo head, however I was told ball heads arent very good, yet they seem to be the best ??

It would come in over your budget, but the combo I went with is; Gitzo 3540XLS and RRS BH-55 head. The 3540XLS is great as it is about tall enough with 3 of the leg extensions out, but then it has the option of extending the 4th leg extension which makes it tall enough for me to stand under (I'm 6'2") So if I'm ever shooting downhill, or looking up a lot, then there is planty of extension to play with.

What is the biggest lens you have? For heads I would look at the ones from RRS (expensive but the best), Markins, Arca Swiss and Arcatech. It sounds like you are going to mostly be using smaller lenses, so you might get away with a smaller head.

The biggest I currently have is a 70-300mm so around 6 inches long at full extension, but light. Ofcourse eventually a 600mm prime would be awesome but then if i had 8k to spend on lenses I could buy another head ?

What camera and lenses are you going to mount on it?

Seems like a bit of a waste of money when you've only got a 70-300. You could probably get better photos by spending the money elsewhere.

But a tripod i+ head is an investment. There is no point continuously upgrading you tripod as it will just waste money.

If you think your ever going to go bigger then 300mm F/2.8, you really need to go for the 5541LS Tripod
