HI all :)

I plan on building the rig below have I made any glaring mistakes that anyone can point out? I have a harddrive and dvd that I was going to reuse from my old comp.

I went AMD mainly to give me enough spare cash to get an 8800 as this rig will be used mainly for gaming. I assume this would be wiser than going Intel dual core and getting a lesser graphics card?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail £59.99
(£70.49) £59.99

Abit KN9 nForce Ultra (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £39.99
(£46.99) £39.99

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400 £89.99
(£105.74) £89.99

BFG GeForce 8800 GTS OC 320MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £179.99
(£211.49) £179.99

Hiper HPU-4M580 Type R 580W ATX2.2 PSU - Black £47.99
(£56.39) £47.99

Akasa AK-ZEN-01-BK Zen Black Case - No PSU £24.99
(£29.36) £24.99.

**Edit ***

Sorry forgot to mention that budget top end is around £500

*******

One last question :D I was looking at getting this case as it had a power supply built in, would the PSU be strong enough for the above kit?

Antec NSK6500 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W PSU

Many thanks

Guilty as charged!! :)

I dont think I can do it cheap enough and keep the graphics card.

I'll have another try just to please you :D

If I were you I would go conroe and get a 7600gt or something and wait it out until the 2nd gen dx10 cards come out later this year. The current ones won't be all that great for dx10 because they are really just high end dx9 cards.

Personally I'd agree that if you had to choose between a C2D and an 8800, I'd go for the 8800 in a gaming rig. But it'd definitely be worth eating beans for a couple of months and saving up for a C2D as well.

Take 2!!

Ok heres a second attempt had to drop the Graphics to keep to the budget I am also hoping that the Antec power supply will be enough to run the 1950?

If not it will be 30 quid more I'll use the same power supply // case combo as my first attempt.

What do people think about this one?

Antec NSK6500 Super Midi Tower Case - 430W PSU £58.99
(£69.31) £58.99

G.Skill 2GB DDR2 NR PC2-6400 (2x1GB) CAS5 Dual Channel Kit (F2-6400 £89.99
(£105.74) £89.99

Gigabyte GA_965P_S3 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £59.99
(£70.49) £59.99

Intel Core 2 DUO E6300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.86GHz (1066FSB) - Retail £101.99
(£119.84) £101.99

PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £107.99
(£126.89) £107.99

Comments about pros and cons between the two systems more than welcome I personally dont feel thats its got as much grunt for games as the first one I posted.

Many thanks

Thomo

I think that as long as you have the 2GB of ram, the x1950 will suit you just fine. If you play really grappically intense games, have you thought about the 512MB version? If you look at most benchmarks, while the x1950 pro isn't as good as the 8800, the x1950 is still more than satisfactory, and will be for some time still.

Good Luck, and let us know what you decide.

Both rigs you specced look good to me, although DO NOT buy the Hiper PSU you specced in the first one. If you want a PSU, get a decent brand like Antec, Corsair, Tagan, Seasonic etc.

To save money go for a case/PSU bundle like the Antec that you specced.

Out of the 2 specs, the one with the AMD X2 and 8800 will be best for games, despite not having a Conroe CPU. However, like others have said, you really should be aiming to get Conroe. If you could squeeze tjhe 8800 into your second spec, it'd be absolutely perfect - the best spec for that price.

Just a quicky

Will the antec case // psu have enough juice for either system?

A big thankyou to all of you for your help incase you're interested this is what i've decided to go for. Means I have a 100 quid extra for beer tokens, cheap and cheerful won the day :) the 1950 seems like a very good card for the price and should tide me over.

£436.98 delivered - hopefully it'll do the job for me :)
