Giving a hedge a really good trim

Hi,

We have a hedge at the front of the house between the neighbours drive and mine. He very rarely cuts it as he works away a lot, and I'm juggling two jobs so don't always get the time either.

I've given it a trim today but I could really do with giving it a proper cut back, taking maybe a foot off the top so it's back to the level it was when we moved here 8 years ago. Also trimming it back away from the pavement as it really obscures our vision when driving off. Because it doesn't get trimmed very much it's really woody and my hedge trimmer simply can't cope, so what's the best tool for the job?

I'm thinking maybe hire a chainsaw, or would I be better to leave the job to a pro?

I paid 30 for a trim and remove from the local gardeners, not worth the hire of a chainsaw for.

Do you know what it is? It may want cutting at certain times of the year or you'll do more damage than good

A gardener I am not :D It's green and hedge like, that's all I know!

£30 sounds like a plan though. From a bit of reading around it seems chainsaws aren't really suitable anyway. Might as well get a man in :)

bitslice - there's lots of it to do though! I'll get some quotes and see where we are then.

A cheap electric hedge trimmer will tackle that easily enough, but the clear up is the labour intensive bit.

I ended up with about 6 green bins worth after a couple of hours yesterday!

Getting someone in could well be the way to go.

Mine won't :D

Since posting I've been asking around my mates and I can get my hands on a heavy duty electric trimmer and maybe even a petrol one so I might give those a try first.

The in laws have a shredder which should reduce the bulk a little but like you say, I'm still going to end up with a mountain of waste.

We've got a conifer hedge in our garden, we use a bog standard hedge trimmer to cut it, it does a pretty good job.

I inherited the trimmers I have from a relative. Everywhere you look they have such bad reviews it's no wonder he gave them away! Inability to cut anything even slightly like a twig and burning the motors out if you try.

I'll try some half decent ones first :)
