Giving credit card details to make a reservation, CVV?

So, this is a pet peeve of mine and I have always avoided restaurants that insist on taking your credit card details when booking a table online. In fact, a lot of restaurants that don't specify your charges in case of no-show are actually breaking the rules.. They have to specify the charges. The last one I complained to was a small place I wanted to book a table for two at lunchtime midweek -- and they wanted my credit card details! :confused: Seriously! And they didn't even say how much the no-show charge was.

Anyhoo. I've been tasked with booking a table for a big group (8+) in the 2nd week of December and in this case I'll admit they may have a case for taking details to confirm the booking. At least they are clear about the charges, and it's only if you cancel within 48hrs. But, having said that they want me to fill a form in with all my details, including my CVV number. Is that normal? I thought the CVV was for online/telephone transactions only, showing "card not present" or something like that. Retailers should never store that as it would give them (or anyone who steals it) free reign with my card online, no? :confused:

Well I answered my own question but the restaurant has come back to me already and insisting on having the CVV;

From Visa Europe's own set of rules;

5.4.3.1 Merchant Use of Account Number, Cardholder Signature, Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2), or Stored Credential

A Merchant must comply with all of the following:

(snip)

- In the Europe Region, not request a Card Verification Value 2 (CVV2) from the Cardholder on a paper order form or any other written form

Well you aren't writing it down, are you? It's much easier just to dine where you are known and don't get this sort of mither.
They've asked for it on the confirmation form for my booking, so yes.

Only dine where I am "known"? Err ok.

Yes, but I read that as *THEY* fill in the confirmation form, over the phone, not you personally write upon it. Are you saying YOU have to write on this form? As in go visit the place, or they send it in the post to you, and you post it back?

Just put an incorrect number in, they'll only know if they try to authorise it - chances are they won't unless you're a no show,

Not a bad idea. I'd like to know if they actually need it to charge me for a no show though. Just out of interest.

I've never known actually having to pay a deposit in the form of a pre-authorisation to book a table in a restaurant, I know people ask for card numbers - but still... Maybe it's super swanky!

@ the OP - if you're worried about it and you absolutely have to give a card number for pre-auth, you could simply get a prepaid card like a monzo and just have £50 on it or something, that way you can just freeze the card and only turn it on when you need it - if you're super paranoid like me 8)

They will need the CVV to do a pre-auth request for the deposit amount if you don't turn up. I would assume they are making this request at the point you make the booking, rather than storing the details to do later. So in this instance it is a cardholder not present transaction. Seems ok to me?

this seems very odd - what sort of restaurant makes you fill out a paper form to make a reservation? Surely they'd enter these details into some sort of booking system no?

are you really saying that you've been sent a bit of paper to fill this out on or have you quoted the wrong bit of the visa regulations here? Surely you do this sort of reservation either online or over the phone
