Giving priority to non-torrent traffic?

When I download anything in utorrent it makes the rest of the network very slow and the internet is basically unusable.

We have a 2Mb connection but even a fairly slow download will slow the internet right down.

Is there anyway I can prioritise other traffic so the internet is faster other than just simply limiting the torrent speed to under 10Kb/s.

The torrent program itself should be able to do this.

You may also want to limit the number of connections as that can slow your internet down too.

You'll probably find limiting the upload speed has more of an affect than limiting the torrent download speed. Limiting it somewhere below 10k should be fine.

You really want the torrent app to change in realtime, rather than fixed reduction. Otherwise dl in torrent will be slower.
