Giving up sugar in tea

I've been cutting all the crap out my diet like processed foods and fat and sugar and taking on a vegan diet.

After a month of eating healthy (as a snack I dip raw broccoli in humus) my girlfriend ordered a big dirty Chinese takeaway and it tasted sooo good it made my foods seems so bland and it's took me a week again to get the yum yum taste back for natural foods. Not eating that salty crap again.

Anyways point is I've been trying to cut down sugar in my teas. I've successfully cut down to 1tsp but just can't bear it with none. Everyone says I'll get used to it, but it still tastes grim without the sugar. Has anyone done this successfully - and how long did it take to get used to it?

My girlfriend always had sugar until she met me (don't have it) as I always forgot to put it in.

I think she got used to it pretty quickly, says it tastes better now.

I have tried with sugar and think it tastes a lot nicer without, just stop using it and you will soon get used to it.

I am completely the opposite. Can't stand sugar in my tea or coffee. But it is true that over time you should be able to get used to it. Perhaps try sweeteners? They aren't ideal and some say just as bad but might be worth a go.

Maybe try half a spoonful then less and less over time?

Make the tea stronger so its more rich tasting.

Steep the tea for longer and use less milk.

And sweeteners take no getting used to but yeah probably not any better than sugar really.

Never bothered with sugar in tea but for years was plagued with taking 3 in my coffee. Just decided one day right, down to two... then one... then none but for first few weeks I had none with a chocolate biscuit :)

Just takes time. I used to have 2 tsp, then went down to 1 (it tasted horrid at first) and then down to 0....which again tasted horrible. Now if I have any sugar in tea or coffee it tastes vile - all I can taste is the sugar and nothing else. All this took a couple of years at least.

I used to take 3-4 sugars in my tea and now much prefer it without any. Like you I used to hate the taste of tea without sugar. The turning point came for me when I went through a patch of drinking green tea and when I went back to the humble cuppa is was just way too sweet.

I don't approve of the vegan thing though! :p:D

One spoon of sugar isn't going to do you much harm. Get it down you.

I stopped having two sugars around 5 years ago.

What I can remember from it was: Switching to half spoon then reduced that to 1 instead of 2, then just kept reducing it to nothing. Will need SOME willpower, but I didn't find it difficult at all.

I think sweeteners are probably worse for you than natural sugar.

I now drink black coffee and black tea without sugar or sweetener. Although I prefer a little milk in my tea!

Don't forget it all adds up through the week to one huge pot of sugar you've eaten. The little things add up.

Haha I've been drinking green tea for quite a while now, onto spearmint tea now. I think the same is happening to me as I had a normal brew the other day at a friends and it tasted so weird so I brought some green tea round as he brings his own coffee to mine as I never have any.

Takes about 2 weeks when I did it. Dont even like it with sugar now.

Did you feel a bit rough after the chinese? When I have done something similar having a junk food splurge makes me feel ill after healthy eating.

But a week is also a long period of time and unless you're sitting on your arse all week, it's not going to do you much harm if any at all.

I have tea a maximum of two times a day, with one teaspoon of sugar, but at the same time I barely have any other sugary foods (certainly no sweets, biscuits or cake). It's all about moderation.
