Did I just read that right?

Italy's upper house of parliament recently voted through legislation to abolish the law that makes vaccination mandatory for children before they start school. The amendment will mean parents of unvaccinated children will no longer face fines.

I am simply lost for words, the opposite should be going in, record fines and jail time for not vaccinating, not removing the penalties?!

That's where they build bridges that fall down and say after that they'll inspect them in future.

When their immigrant influx brings measles and the herd immunity is lost, and children and babies start dying, they might rethink this law.

There should be a law that states that schools aren't permitted to enrol children who have not been vaccinated. I think that would be a more effective measure.

Bit more background on the situation in Italy.

The League’s leader, Matteo Salvini, has also often said that 10 vaccines are “too many” and that the choice over whether to vaccinate children should be left to parents.

“Vaccination yes, obligation no,” he said at a rally last week.

“We need to be safe from measles, but other vaccines seem to me absolutely superfluous,” Mr. Salvini said, adding that he had his own children vaccinated

He knows that plenty of people will use this to not vaccinate their children, but at least his party will get their votes.

We do not routinely vaccinate against TB anymore, we still give it in certain backgrounds, my own child has had it, but the modern strains of TB are not as well defended against by vaccination unfortunately.
A dose of polio however would change their minds ;)

If the parents are idiots, chances are likely the kids will be idiots when in adult form also

I think it's fine if they choose to take their chances with natural selection

Unfortunately it isn't as simple as this. By rejecting vaccinations they increase the danger for others, not just themselves. Look up herd immunity.
 
The vaccine issue is a prime example of the stupidity of believing that everyone is entitled to an opinion and that must be respected.

Opinions are not equal if they contradict facts.

So you think that people who aren't able to have vaccines for medical reasons (such as those without a fully working immune system, people who are undergoing chemotherapy, young babies, etc.) should be exposed to entirely preventable disease because of the reckless stupidity of others? I guess if you're okay with that sort of thing, there's no real point having a conversation about it.

As I understand it, Italy is currently being governed by a far-right coalition of people who have little experience in politics but who got elected on the mandate to cut immigration. Is it really surprising that this is the sort of outcome you get when you elect a populist party?
 
No surprise here, it's the continuance of "dah govment stay oot mah busness" weirdos taken to the extreme, Because a truly libertarian world is one where if you can't afford for your child to be vaccinated, welp, **** that child huh.
