Glasses... eugh.

So I had an eye test today after putting it off for years. I've struggled for the past couple of years to adjust between long and short distances and find it difficult to make out detail far away without squinting. I don't get headaches from doing it, but I tend to find my eyes are quite sore in the evenings if I have been looking long distances more than usual (lectures, seminars, driving, playing golf, etc).

The optician said I have -0.50 prescription for both eyes but wasn't eager to suggest whether I should buy a pair of specs or not seeing as I'd only use them a few hours a week most of the time. The cost of a pair of specs doesn't really put me off, I'd happily spend £70-80 on a pair as the prescription is relatively simple and for the amount of time I'd wear them I don't need designer frames. My main concern is that my eyes become dependent upon them and my eyesight progressively deteriorates over time. Again, the optician wasn't particularly eager to suggest whether I buy or not.

My old man's prescription is horrific, -2.5 in one eye and -3.0 in the other IIRC and he ends up splurging £300-400 on a pair of specs and then more on single use contacts for playing golf. As far as I know there is no history of eyesight problems on either side of the family, though everybody ends up wearing them with age. My nightmare is that I end up with appalling eyesight like my father and having an optician with a phobia of giving solid advice one way or another is far from helpful!

Any suggestions on what I should do? Also, are glasses going to become the bane of my existence (breaking them, keeping them clean, losing them etc)? As a student I'm entitled to a 25% discount at the optician I used, so ideally if I'm going to take the plunge I'd like to do it whilst my unemployed alcoholism is still professionally recognised as studenthood. ;)

Wear glasses for a few years until your eyes settle down and in the mean time start putting some cash away to pay for laser eye treatment.

That's nothing, I'm -10 in both eyes and some people on here are worse. My glasses don't cost anywhere near £400 though, more like £75.

I wear contact lenses 99% of the time and they cost next to nothing a month, as I rarely wear glasses I don't bother with expensive ones, just have the lenses thinned slightly.

If you need glasses then get some.

-2.5 and -3.0 is horrific? :P

I used to have -6.75 -7.0! (wooo for lasik).

Breaking them was an issue when I was young - played lots of sports etc. so they broke quite easily. As I grew older, didn't happen as much. Cleaning them isn't too much of a hassle. Keep a small cloth with you and that's all you need.

Losing, depends on how careful you are :p It was a massive hassle for me because with my eye sight, if I lost them, I couldn't even see enough to find them. With -0.50, that won't be an issue.

I was perfect vision until the dreaded PC came along.

I am 0.5 and 0.75 you can't even buy off the shelf glasses at that level.

I have them for driving as street signs are blurry from a distance without but that's all.

Sometimes if my eyes are tired I'll throw them on but that's letting them be lazy so I tend not to use them for days.

My glasses cost 120€ for the glass and 120€ for the frames. :D

-3 isn't horrific, less than (more than, I guess) -5 is considered to be moderate.

I've had the same pair for 2 years, buy a decent pair or just be careful and they'll last you for ages. Or buy lots of cheap ones :p

Thats about the same prescription I am. Does the laser surgery mean you don't have to wear glasses anymore? How much did it cost you if you don't mind me asking?

That prescription is nowhere near horrific - mild at worst. I'm -8.00 (R), -7.50 (L), though usually wear contact lenses. My glasses were expensive, but they were designer (ish) frames and I had some of the thinner lenses. They cost the best part of £230, but I could have easily done it for less than £100, even with nice frames.

Hmm, I guess it's back to the optician tomorrow to start looking for a pair. Are things like glazed lenses, UV filters, thinned lenses and driving tinted lenses a waste of time? All sounds like a car dealership chucking extras at you to me...

Mine is about the same as the OP prob a bit worse now TBH. Getting glasses was the best thing i ever did. Driving is better, TV and Cinema is better.

My eyes have gotten worse but that's due to sitting in front of a PC all day every day.

I only use my glasses for driving and tv. If you need glasses, get glasses. Simples!

-12.00 for my glasses prescription. I pay about £200 every other year.
-11.00 for my contact lens prescription. The glasses are as a backup and to give my eyes some oxygen.

my dads -19 in both eyes hes practically blind -0.5 is nothing :p

I myself am perfect vision in my left and really bad right eye about -4 with astigmatism that's bad and its also lazy. No matter what contacts or glasses I wear everything is squint when I wear them :(

Studies into this show no support for the notion that wearing glasses will accelerate their deterioration and weak support for the exact opposite so I wouldn't worry about it.

Me, I don't find glasses much of a pain and found even weak prescriptions improved my vision so much I preferred wearing them to not.

I used to wear glasses all the time but found that the amount of benefit I got was so small that I don't bother now. Plus, the amount of peripheral vision you lose from wearing them seems to counter any benefit they do give.

just get contacts, glasses are crap and uncomfortable. I wear acuvue oasys hydraclear, which i can and have worn for days on epic weekends without discomfort! Could never wear glasses again.

another arguement for contacts, no loss of peripheral vision
