I suffered a rather bad injury a few months ago, which has resulted in me having to wear glasses for the forseeable future. I'd previously worn them for driving and reading, but I'm going to be needing them full time from now on. Unfortunatly, because my vision is so bad (-10 and -11), I am a bit limited to what I can choose in terms of frames.

I have an appointment later in the week to select a suitable pair, but I've no idea what to go for. My only stipulation (and I'm going to stress this to the optician) is that they look at least mildly fashionable. I don't fancy looking like my elderly dad. Glasses seem to be more in vogue these days, so hopefully I can avoid the obnoxiously sized, tortoise shell types. One concern is how I'm going to be able to get on with continuing downhill mountain biking. Time will tell, I suppose.

So, do we have any other glasses wearers here? What brand do you wear? Do any of you also play sports? If so, I'd be greatful to hear how you get on.

Contacts not an option?

I've worn glasses since I was a baby but switched to lenses 8ish years ago and now only wear my glasses round the house.

on the topic of what's going to look good then the only option there is to spend a while in the opticians trying on anything and everything and awkwardly staring at yourself in the mirror until you find something you like and suits your face.

Unfortunatly not. At least not for a few years. The surface of my eyes is too badly scarred. I was actually hoping for laser eye surgery, but despite sight being arguably the most fundemental of the senses, it's still classed as a costmetic proceedure under the NHS.

My prescription is up their with the OPs in terms of strength. My frames are thin metal ones from Boots (Lozza titanium) with very expensive lenses to get them down to a reasonable thickness (I think the current varifocal ones are Carl Zweiss ... my previous pair had Nikon lenses but I found them to be poor). I wouldn't want to do sport in them though as they feel too fragile for that.

Mind if I ask how much I should expect to pay for thin lenses? I can't seem to find a decent price list? Ideally I'd like the thinest I can get, but I have a feeling that they are still going to be jam-jar like.

Re the Oakleys: If I thought I could get away with those, I would:D

Something to bear in mind with your prescription. Over -6 you are more at risk of retinal detachment. Physical activities can cause this, especially jolts to the head, be careful man i only recently found out being -5 and -7 myself.

I had a scan of the back of my eye done last week as a follow up to the injury I sustained. Apparently it all looks very good. Just looked like a picture of the surface of Mars to me, but still.

My lenses this time were ~£450, but they are varifocals which up'ed the prices significantly over the previous pair which were only single vision (but screwed by close up viewing due to their strength for distance viewing). The increase was around the £150-200 mark. I would note that my prescription is not only strong but is also defined as being "complex" by the NHS which means I get free eye tests and money towards the glasses (a tiny amount)

Normally at this point someone say to just order them cheaper online but normally the online sites don't go up to this sort of prescription level and they are very sensitive to the fitting of the glasses (my previous pair took multiple visits to get correct).

Same here. I've been given some forms to fill in which should* hopefully entitle me to some discounts. I've been looking at some frames on the SpecSavers website that look quite nice. I'm just hoping that they can be fitted with suitable lenses though.

I had an appointment at spec savers the other day and have managed to sort a pair of glasses. I found some decent looking Hugo Boss ones, so went with them. I've also been assured that the lenses will be thinner, albeit not by much because of my hilariously poor vision.

In regard to DH, I'm not sure what to do really. Before any of this happened I used to wear my driving / reading glasses before they were smashed. I don't fancy that happening again. I've been told I could probably wear daily lenses, but I've been strongly advised by the doc to not use any until my eyes are fully healed. In approximately two years...Wouldn't mind so much, but I built / modified a rather nice 07 Cruz Heckler for quarry riding a couple months ago. Sods law.
