Recently I got annoyed with the adverts being displayed in some of RSS feeds that I'm subscribed to in NetNewsWire. I came across this preference pane which works as a HTTP proxy meaning that it will block any adverts in any application. However, the adverts weren't blocked by the bundled filters so I had to include the filter rules myself
This also works in all web browsers in any virtual machine application (e.g. VMware Fusion) if you change the proxy and the port in Internet Explorer (which is applied system-wide) and Firefox (which uses its own proxy settings). Virtual machines are seen as a different computer by GlimmerBlocker hence why you have to change the settings. This helps to cut down on the number of duplicate plug-ins/extensions installed on the same Mac
