Hi Peeps

I've seen Gloomhaven and it has taken my interest but my kids are too young for it so whilst we play other board games it will be 4 or 5 years before they're up for anything so complex.

In the meantime I saw there is a PC game by the same name which seems to get good reviews. Is it worth it a s a single player game? Will it spoil Gllomhave boardgame should I play it in the future?

Any advice gratefully recieved.

My understanding is the 1.0 release of gloomhaven is the same scenarios as the board game, there are about 16 classes in total and 6 starting classes to pick from in gloomhaven, you will want to play at least 2 characters and of the 200ish scenarios on a complete playthrough you play roughly 90 of them so I think you would be fine playing through the PC game first, pretty sure it also has one of scenarios in it too but I haven't played it since the early beta time.

Wowsers this is difficult. I’m playing it on friendly and need several goes to complete each quest. The card management is the trickiest bit. Still really quite entertaining.

great game indeed. shame you've not got a group of 4 that can play the board game version as i'd have thought that's the really fun one, i'm yet to play the pc version.

it has it's problems, but certainly one of the best board games i've played.

It's a great board game, as Apex says its an amazing experiance played properly in the flesh, but the PC game is a good experience too.

If you join the various UK facebook (urgh) board game selling pages then you can quite often pick it up for around £60

How old are your kids? I've been playing it with my kids since they were 8 & 10, and I think they wild have been fine if I bought it earlier.

Agreed with Lord-Jaffa start with Jaws of the Lion first, a good introductory. not overly expensive of an investment. a good way to get others invovled. its possible the speed which it moves through could be good for kids if they are of the right age and development (i'd say 10yrs).

all my research says start with it first, its a solid introductory. its a quicker set up vs Gloomheavan full. and your not loosing anything the charactors can be ported over to the full game so bonus.
a lot of people say Jaws of the Lion has good replayability dispite being smaller in scope. the set up and tear down is well done and quick in comparason to the original which is a key for a lot of people.
The map books are a boon vs the title.
it should be noted there are some differances between the FotL and GH and GH PC some minor, some less so.

I recently purchase the board game to start platying. i have the PC version but it hasnt quiet gripped me yet, i also wanted to start moving away from playing PC so much and try and find people in person to play with.

I did see Gloom Heaven down to £80 in the recent Amazo day so maybe Black friday will also see i cheap. Frostheavan cost seems o be over £200  but does alow the charactoers to come over to the new game.

Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion £40

Playing through the entire campaign easily takes over 100 hours of gameplay a good portiion of the scenarios
vs
Gloomheaven £130:
Playing through the entire campaign 113 to 184hes going through around 75 scenarios out of 200.

not so sure on gloomhaven forgotten circles as didnt do a lot of research on it.

if you never played the Board game, i believe the PC version will also be good starting point (i have played this pre Version 1 release). but i might also suggest Demeo PC.
the reviews are generall all positive for the PC edition. a lot of it is obviously automated so its a simple set up and go. but i would say wont necessary enjage the youngers ones. if the goal is to engage them then possibly boarf game.
Asmodee - Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Begins - Board Game might also be of interest as a starting game aimed as youngsters.

just a quick on on this.
i'm having some problesm getting in to GHJotL but thats because i'm rubbish :) and not used to board games.

i see a bost saying Gloomhaven digital will be free on epic store 22-29th september. aparantly free to keep afterwards. so just a heads up to keep watch for

Jumping on this thread to ask a probably obvious question.

Just started playing the PC version of this - and I want to ask about the whole 'burning' cards mechanic. Is this basically like giving a time limit to each scenario? It's unavoidable that you are slowly whittling away your deck until your character is exhausted?

This is going to be a struggle for me! I always play tactical games via a slow inching process!

indeed.

don't forget to check if the card is a lost card or a discard card after being used. an easy mistake to make when you first start out, though with that said, i guess pc doesn't let you make this mistake.

one thing i'll say without too much spoiler. there are plenty ways to get cards back as you get new characters/items, so it's possible to last much longer. very infreguently do we have anyone get "exhausted"/run out of cards through playing them, but instead, through losing them when taking too much damage.

Thanks! Yes, I've only played one scenario so far, and managed to exhaust my brute with still full health, so clearly playing like a pillock!
playing like us all. i have only played the board game version, and totally forgot that there were cards that get lost, and just played them all as clearly, they are the better ones. once we finished we all realised the mistake that we need to put them in the lost pile. now scenario 2, we played the same cards, but lost them, and we ran out of cards halfway into the second room.

eventually you'll learn the right balance and when it's the right time to go hard, however no matter how good you get at the game, once you play a new character, you'll discover a whole new play style required, and it also depends on your team mates characters too.

i had a mind thief that went super hard super early, exhausted in most scenarios, but it allowed my team mates to go soft, saving their great lost cards for the final room.

don't feel like you're failing by getting the balance wrong. the game is designed for this and it's the over coming of this issue that is part of the beauty of this game, and then as soon as you do overcome this, you're too op, and will likely retire the character and try a new one.

The first levels are actually some of the hardest. Once you get a few items the game really gets more friendly honestly. Just having to slug it against hordes of enemies with nothing but a potion is tough early on.

Well I played through that first scenario again, and won by the skin of my teeth. Not helped by the fact that I hadn't realised you have to actively equip the equipment you have bought. So my Brute and Scoundrel both had a healing potion but absent-mindedly left it behind apparently. And my Brute wasn't wearing his helmet.
So I finished the mission with both, I think, about to be exhausted through lack of cards on their next turn - or killed if an enemy landed one more good attack.

Does the requirement to equip before a mission imply that any item you use is for that mission only - it will be depleted? (Even, for instance, a potion you equip at the start but never need to use?)

Not depleted for other scenarios, but it's a lost item. So once you use it, it's used for that scenerio only, unless, later you get certain items/characters that can bring them back.

I guess with pc you need to select which items you wish to bring into the scenerio before you start, as later you may have 2 helmets, 2 body pieces, and wish to decide depending on the scenerio.
