The Wood - White Paint turning yellow thread prompted me to start this thread. We're in the process of decorating and I had a surprise when I popped the lid off the tin of gloss paint. When I were a lad, paint was solvent based and it was a liquid. This new low-VOC stuff is like blancmange and it paints on really streaky. It also takes weeks to cure or dry or whatever it does. So I thought I'd better check I'm doing this right because it's obviously been a long time since I last opened a tin of paint...

I've got a couple of questions.
1) What primer do you use with this stuff?
2) Are there any tips to getting a smoother finish? I can't flat it back because it's still so soft...
3) Is it normal that it takes so long to dry and after weeks it's still quite soft?
4) Will it ever harden like traditional solvent-based paint?
5) Can you still get solvent-based paints or are they not available any more?

Carry on being so useful in this forum and you may be a recommended choice for Man of Honour 2013! :)

OMG:o

Others more worthy than me .

As you can see from that there are many types of synthetic bristle, & difference in quality, I have some synthetic brushes & their weren't that expensive, but the bristles are stiff, despite washing in warm water, they are useless for water base paint, yet my Purdy synthetic brushes cost around £25, they are soft & supple, a pleasure to paint with.

Pure bristle is basically animal hair, seem to be mostly hog or occasionally badger.
