Glossy or Matte Screen?

Hello everyone, I'm currently in the market for a new monitor around 24 inch but I can't decide between a glossy or matte screen. I hear glossy provides better more vibrant colours whilst matte screens have more washed out colours but are better at preventing glare and reflections. I have only ever had matte screens so I can't say how glossy compares but for those people who have tried both what are your opinions and which screen type is best?

I'd have matte every day of the week.

When chosing my laptop I went to the Apple store and had identical models with the antiglare (AppleSpeak for matte!) sat next to the glossy and just felt matte would be best.

Having used other peoples machines with glossy screens since I stand-by that decision.

For a 24" I'd go for the Dell U2410. And it's £120 cheaper here on OcUK!

I tend to go for matte screens because i use my laptop outside and my desktop monitor close to a window so i would get a lot of glare.

I guess it mainly depends on where you are using the monitor.

I find it's down to personal preference and how light it is in the room that you are working in. I have a matte screen at home (Dell 2209WA) which I adore, it's an excellent monitor.

Whereas at work I have a glossy 24" 3D monitor which is very very nice, but as I have to work in quite a well lit room, I find the reflections on the screen are quite distracting.

I would disagree with your statement about matte screens producing more washed out colours, I find the Dell is possibly better at producing more vibrant colour than the glossy monitor.

Personally I prefer working on a matte screen. :)

I've recenty got Asus 23" 3D screen and its abit glossy, but i was expecting it to be worse. It's not really that bad, i don't see many reflections and its never distracting when gaming.

The Asus was one of the monitors I was having a look at but after reading the review at Overclock3D it doesnt look so good for a glossy screen

Finally what nearly kills the entire VG236H, that shiny screen. I'm sure many of you started off on CRTs and always found the fact that the room, the sun, and worst of all you, were reflected in the screen to be hugely off-putting. We all rejoiced when TFT monitors appeared with their matte screens and removed this forever. No longer was the tiniest gleam of sunlight or white t-shirt invading all you saw.
The shiny coating on the monitor really needs a dark room to be at its best (well really it needs to be binned off at the earliest hardware revision and the guy who thought of it taken out the back and shot).

Im not sure I would end up buying it and then regretting looking at this review.

I always go for glossy when I can because it looks so much better to me than matte. Colours feel like they have a lot more depth to them, and the screen is more appealing to look at.

But glossy screens are very hard to find, mostly because everyone moans about the reflections... well here's an idea... move the screen out of direct sunlight?!?

It's all personal preference though really... some people like crunchy peanut butter, some people don't.

Yeah thats one of the reasons why I may go for a Glossy screen this time.

Glare is a problem on a glossy screen which is why i always go matte but being honest i agree with what others said that colours look a little better on a glossy screen.

Very simple answer.... glossy if you have no direct light on the screen, or you're not in a well lit room. Glossy is better for monitors than laptops because of this, as a laptop is mobile so there will be times when its in direct light and that can be extremely annoying and make it totally not viewable with a glossy screen. Matte is usually best overall even for static monitors, just having a TV on can reflect on a glossy screen.
