Hi,

I want to carry out a full backup of my Gmail account, I have come some software below, and wondered if anyone on here has had any experience of it? Or could recommend an alternative method, i need to backup the entire account such as inbox and sent folders.

Many thanks,

Hi,
Thanks for your replies,

What I would like to do is backup all the emails from one account and transfer them to another Gmail account so that they are on Gmails server and are accessible from anywhere. Does anyone know of any alternative methods apart from the software above that would allow me to do this?

Bit of an odd thing to want to do considering everything is held by Google anyway. Unless you think their servers are going to fry along with all of their backup servers there is absolutely no need. You can access gmail from any PC in the world as long as it is connected.

It's not odd at all really. I like to have a repo of all my Gmail contents locally as part of my weekly backup anyway. Yes Gmail has it all secure but I still prefer to have a backup of everything if it allows you to do so.

Why does every thread asking a question get at least one "Why would you want to do that? Here is a solution that does not in anyway do what you want to do instead because I can't accept that you would want to do something that I wouldn't want to do"

At a guess, I would think the OP has a new email address and would like to transfer his emails before he stops using the old one. Not that its relevent.

OP - Gmail dosen't provide a specific function for this taht I know of. Best option is to use a regular email client (Thunderbird is free and will work) - load up both gmail accounts as "IMAP" type accounts. Once it finishes updating, drag and drop the entire set of inbox/sent items/deleted items etc from the old to the new. It will take some time if there is a lot, but its a fire and forget job, so run it overnight if needs be.

configure outlook with imap to downlaod everything...

export your google contaxcts to a csv to back them up...

IMAP only downloads the headers (as standard) as far as I'm aware and so won't actually give you a backup. You're probably better off using POP3 for backup purposes (but IMAP is better if you're using it as an actual client for your email).

Whilst its true that IMAP won't download headers until they are called, drag drop to another account will call them, so it should work fine.

POP is generally more prone to loosing messages than IMAP. Plus the normal default behaviour for POP is to delete the server side emails once downloaded. I know gmail isn't set up to do this by default, but seeing as IMAP is designed to leave it on the server, its another reason why I would choose it. Finally, POP really isn't designed to allow import into an email server this way (In fact I don't know if it works), but unless I'm mistaken IMAP specifically supports this.

Hi,
Thanks for your responses,

I've done as suggested and downloaded All Email from one account and transferred it to the All Mail folder to the new account, Thunderbird says that the new account is up to date. If I check the inbox folder and sent items in the original account they add up to more. Inbox currently has 7116. Sent Items 2424. At current in the new account under All Mail, its showing 8443. I wondered if this is because Gmail has grouped some of the mail together?

Have you checked the spam folder? Perhaps its marked some mail as spam because you don't have the addresses in your contact list?

Hi,
Thanks for your responses,

I've tried to copy the emails acorss again to my new account, using either Outlook or Thunderbird, but each time I try it either says it could not be completed due to the server timming out, or some emails could not be transferred acorss correctly. Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could try?
