Gmail instead of googlemail

Is there anyway of getting a gmail account instead of the googlemail that UK users are forced to use?

I have had a quick look around google (search) and cant find anything, so thought I would ask the collective here

My account receives mail if I send it to gmail.com OR googlemail.com

It uses IP detection to assign a .gmail or a .googlemail address. If you'd like me to set up a .gmail account for you from the US, as I have for a dozen or so OcUKers, drop me a line.

yes but I bet your account is already ***@gmail.com, if you try and sign up for a new gmail account, it forces you to use ****@googlemail.com or .co.uk. I am trying to get a gmail account with a gmail.com ending

just set up a googmail account and then use gmail in your email instead of googlemail. works the same.
