Behind you... Naked!
I use Thunderbird for my EMail app

I also use GMail.

Now, I have done a fresh install recently, and so, I have lost my Emails

Ok, so Gmail still has the emails there, I can see them, but, just in cae they go missing, I have not opened them.

Is there any way that I can re-import all my emails back into thunderbird ?

The reason I want to do this, is that... Well, there is no need to explain, but gettign at some of the emails again would be very important to me.

Thank you very much.

You're adding Gmail as an IMAP account into Thunderbird, just add it and emails will be in sync. If it's POP3 just select the option to leave copies on the server though IMAP is the better option.

Google also has built in Checkout features for all Google services so you can export your Gmail to files stored locally. Just use that once and you've got an entire backup of your Gmail locally stored as well. You can then import that export folder into Thunderbird and label it under an archive folder or something.

Well, yes, Im doing POP right now, and yes, I am selecting to Leave on the server.

I can see all the EMails when I log on through firefox, and so sure, I will have a look for this export thingy... Thanks.

Killed off my POP Accounts in TBird and made new with IMAP

Failed.

Went into Google and its disabled and so gave it another shot and so far so good...

Downloading all my emails since 2009 - ARGH!

This is what I miss so much about Outlook Express cos I regularly saved those myself and have them all backed up and sorted out nicely.

Anyway 178,863 emails it seems? PHEW!

Will let you know the score as and when.

Trouble is now, is whether this is going to do the same with my Laptop, or whather I can use POP on the laptop and imap on this? How do they work together? It will be interesting to know...

Google says it can take days to archive the emails and going by that its on 7MB of 11.8GB then yeah, its not going to be done in a few minutes thats for sure.

Ok thanks for this guys... I will bore you some more when I know more ok?

It has never been a choice really... POP is how I started doing it and when I tried IMAP, it failed... As I just said, it was a setting and I am using IMAP now.

Why use POP on the laptop?

erm, cos I only use it when Im out and it works using POP and so...

Anyway, please tell me... Whats the benefits of imap over pop?

Because it's two way, and syncs changes back to the mailbox, meaning you don't have to do everything twice. If you put an email in a folder on one device, it will be in a folder on the others. It also means you won't end up redownloading messages more than once, and it's just more designed to cope with access from multiple devices.

I see that would be great.

meaning you don't have to do everything twice.

I dont do anything twice anyway?

If you put an email in a folder on one device, it will be in a folder on the others.

I have realised this - I find that extremely useful.

I have my ebay emails and my solicitors emails and my ocuk emails etc etc etc... On a fresh install, I have had to reset these up and sure, its a pain in the....Neck.

It also means you won't end up redownloading messages more than once, and it's just more designed to cope with access from multiple devices.

Again, I have never had to download messages more than the once even when using POP.

--------------

One advantage that I have had in the past, is that with the GMail emails still being on the server, I can still get at them, even if I trashed them on my PC.

I have done it like this for years and I have never really given it much thought with imap.

I have to be honest, but I have 167 thousand emails and its certainly taking me a while to sort through it, and I have 2 accounts too, but I have to admit, that I am seeing the benefits of it.

I have done the back up and it finished a lot quicker than I thought it would.

So cool for this everyone... And yes, I am now on IMAP and I am happy with it... So far.

Some of those issues will crop up depending on how you access your email. For example if you have a PC and phone checking the same mailbox continuously, they will both receive the message. If you delete from the PC, it will still be on the phone inbox.

If however, you only fire up the laptop occasionally, after you have deleted messages, then it will only get those that remain on the server.

I gave up on either years ago, just use the web clients for all my email (gmail) now!

Hmmm...

Ok, so I have been sorting out all my emails now, I have made up folders as I have always done, these are now on the GMail servers instead of my PC and sure enough, I had a peek with my laptop and the folders all come up on that too.

So sure, I can see the benefits of imap in that respect.

However...

I am no longer able to email out.

Every email comes back to me failed.

Why is this?

I have of course checked the settings and they are all correct.

993 for in / 465 for out

Any ideas?

I can only suggest to check all the settings. Check the outgoing server, sometimes the mail client tries to auto guess it and gets it wrong. Also check the security settings.

Thanks.
I have been using imap now and I can well see the benefits, I really can, and its very handy in that I do stuff on one PC and its also done on another, but boy is it slow!

I am having load of issues with a very frustrating issue in that I cannot reply to a whole load of people directly, I have to "SEND LATER" and then quit and reopen Thunderbird and it will ask if I want to send the EMails and I do it, and they go then, but otherwise, they simply fail.

Thats annoying and NEVER happens in pop?

Other than that, I am happy.
