gmome or kde?

gonna out suse 10 back on is there any dif between these wm ?

To be honest they are both very good fully functional desktop environments. It's usually down to preferance. I personally find KDE really ugly, and the UI a bit messy, but some of its functionality is better than Gnome. Because I use mainly gtk apps i would use gnome (actually i use openbox with nothing much else), but usually there's gtk and qt equivilents of most apps.

Vote for gnome here, but mainly cos it's what I've been using for years.

Plus it's developed on gtk so totaly gpl, compared to qt which is not.

KDE not really in spirit of linux in my mind.

Of the two, I tend to prefer Gnome, but then I prefer a simple desktop environment. Although I'm very interested in the leaps and bounds of KDE (such as applications like Amarok and 'kickoff').

I installed both gnome and kde under k/ubuntu but found that I almost always used kde applications as they seemed better and so reinstalled with just kubuntu. I can't really get that excited by the desktop tbh. It just sits there behind the apps I am using

Gnome was ok and I wouldn't mind using it if kde dissapeared but I did dislike the philosophy that the developers decide everything for you and you just have to accept it.

I like kde purely because i like the QT interface. Found GNome to be a bit cluncky looking.

I've only dabbled with KDE but I didn't really like it very much. Another vote for Gnome here but it's really horses for courses. Try them both and don't just rely on what other people's opinions because your's is the only one that counts!

that's good advice... personally i'd get a live cd that has lots of different window managers on it (knoppix DVD?!?) and try them all out - easier than installing them all. then once you find one you like, use that!

I'm looking forward to seeing what KDE 4 is like. Some screenshots (which may not be genuine) look nice, but I hope they make it less tacky looking.

the screenshots will probably be mock-ups as the interface has barely changed. all changes are under the hood atm.

I prefer Gnome. I find KDE generally looks ugly and unprofessional. Also I have only ever had errors with KDE, none with Gnome.
