Gnome lock-screen (default ctrl+alt+L)

.. does not work. I had some compile errors (Gentoo) but didn't see what they were - does anyone know if there was a module or even configuration item I've missed or somehow not compiled/configured?

Yes. I've re-installed the gnome-screensaver package, but it still doesn't work.. will post anything else I might come across, but it still has me stumped at the moment.
 
Hmm, is your gnome-screensaver even working? Or does it crash when you run it?

It runs in preview, but doesn't appear to kick-in after auto-idle (though my monitor also goes into standby so I can't really tell. But it doesn't ask for my password when I reactivate - I do have "lock" option enabled.)
 
If you run gnome-screenserver from a terminal, does it give any errors?

Providing you got the deamon running,

Run gnome-screensaver-command -l

And see if that gives an errors.
