I am having some problems installing the Gnome Themes. I am pointing the theme installer at the archive for the theme via System > Preferences > Appearance but the theme itself isn't changing fully. The colour of the task bar changes at the top slightly, and the seperator changes slightly by the clock, but that's it..

I am not sure if it's the base install of Gnome that's the issue. Does something specifically within Gnome need to be installed or activated?

Works Ok if you install themes manually, though?

How do I install manually?

I just press the install button, point it at the .tar.gz and that's that.

The other issue is that the Theme doesn't appear as a selection in the main Theme selection window. The only option that is there is Custom and then I have to choose Customise to alter the window or whatever, which is not my understanding of the way it ought to work.

u un tar the file and manually move it, I think its to .themes or summit, yash will no more, I rarely fiddle with themes :p

you will find that some "themes" you download from places like gnome look only contain one component of a complete theme, so you have to mix and match the bits you want from each (gtk engine, window borders, icons, fonts etc)

You may also be trying to install a theme that uses a gtk engine you don't yet have. Double check that one!
