Go for 970 or wait?

Hi, my current system is:

CPU: Intel Core i7-3770 @ 3.40GHz
RAM: Crucial 16.00GB DDR3 1333Mhz
PSU: Coolermaster B700 700w
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6870 1GB

I play on a 32" monitor at 1080p (no plans to upgrade to 1440p/4k), and I'm looking to play next-gen games such as Shadow of Mordor/Far Cry 4 at ultra/high settings, so I'm looking to upgrade my GPU.
Ideally I'd like something which will last at these settings for at least around 2 years.

A few months ago, I was set on getting a 970, but after the whole VRAM issue came out I've been put off a bit.
I've been looking at the R9 290X (8GB) recently, but read that it requires 750w PSU, and upgrading my PSU as well as buying the card would take things out of my budget.
However, I've read also read that despite the VRAM issues, the 970 is still a perfectly good card for 1080p, but I'm worried that the card may not last as long as I originally thought at high settings.

The way I see it I have 3 choices:

1. Go for the 970.

2. Wait for a price drop on the 290X so I can afford the card and a new PSU.

3. Wait for new cards to come out (Not sure when similar level cards are due).

I've read a lot of conflicting comments about the 970, so any advice on what the best option might be, considering my requirements/concerns?

Thanks!

You will probably be looking at a June release date for the 3xx cards. I'd also expect everything other than the top tier model to be rebadged 2xx series if history continues to repeat itself, so I'd take this in to account as well.

I am waiting to see what comes out. My plan is to upgrade this year from my SLI 770's and will be going SLI again.

I don't want to SLI titan x's due to the cost, same goes for the old titans and also don't want to SLI 980/970's at the moment in case a 980TI comes out with more VRAM or something like that anyway.

Will also consider AMD depending on what's available but to summarise, I'm waiting and would recommend waiting.

man this is killing me. Nearly pushed buy on a 970, nearly a 290x a few days ago. I'm on old 570's sli and the vram is just murdering them. Served me so well, but I need an upgrade. :(
