I'm sure there are a few of us on here who have been affected by the big C in some form or another and MacMillan are a fantastic charity who offer help and support to those affected, and abstaining from the sauce for a month is a great easy and healthy way to show your support. If you're teetotal already, then it's even easier, simply sign up, make a page and start raising some money!

To make things interesting, I'm inviting all to participate and tracking progress, and whoever raises the most money will be given a £20 OCUK voucher :)

So get cracking folks, a month isn't hard and it's for a great cause.

What's your excuse?

Participants (click name for page):

Diddums - Raised - £25
Thekwango - Raised - £15

EDIT:

If there's enough interest on here I'll start an OcUK team too :)

Good luck, but I’m afraid I can’t join in. It’s not that I can’t go a month without a drink, it’s just that there’s too much on for me this month. Lots of football matches, nights playing for my pool team, Halloween party, the Anthony Joshua fight. I like to enjoy myself while I can. Isn’t that what life’s all about

Not to be a kill joy but you only think that's what's life all about until you or someone close to you is affected by cancer. Then you'll find your nights out, your parties and Anthony Joshua fights suddenly seem very inconsequential.

@Diddums I'll join you but not for the chance of winning (I won't - probably won't raise much to be honest) but more as moral support.

Edit: you might want to stick a link to the sign up page and your own subs page.

My father has cancer and I think about my own life all the time for personal circumstances. It may seem inconsequential, but these are things that I enjoy, so I’d rather carry on doing them and donating money to help the fight.

Sorry I wasn't meaning to come across as preachy just that some things are brought sharply into perspective as a result of the impact cancer has on our lives.
Edit: you get the imgur iOS thing sorted?

I’m afraid not. I don’t think it’s possible. Shame.

Cheers mate, and good idea, I'll post them up now :)
Maybe keep the op updated with a list of those that join in, just for fun? Might not be that much interest given how attached to their bevvy a lot of the forumites seem to be but anything at all raised is a bonus.
McMillan nurses are absolutely brilliant - I wouldn't and couldn't do what they do not even for ten times their wage.

Another good idea, will do!

For those interested, I lost my father to cancer, my mother has had a double mastectomy, I lost an uncle last month and my wife's had it twice. It strikes extremely close to home for me and the support given by every single person we've been in contact with for treatment or after care has been second to none. Let's not forget that these people don't earn mega bucks or get the limelight they so deserve, so anything I can do to help out to support them.

This is the first time I'm doing something like this but hopefully it's the first of many.

BUT its my Birthday in October its the only time of year I am liable to drink 'more' these days...

Well I'm off and running - £15 quid already, though a fiver of that might be my own!! For what it's worth the money I don't spend on booze in October, I will donate too.

@Diddums there's the option to create a team through the funding page, might be worth doing if we can get enough entrants from here. Fly the flag under the OcUK banner and all that. Though I wonder do we need to maybe hit up an OcUK admin to see if it's ok to use their name, could add the OcUK logo to the team for a bit of free publicity for them?

Surely there's some more folks on here want to partake by not partaking (see what I did there!) Even if you get no sponsorship and simply donate the money you would normally spend on booze over the course of the month it would greatly help.

I've, sadly, had first hand experience of McMillan nurses and I can genuinely say I have never met a more worthy organisation. The support they offer and how they conduct themselves is absolutely awe inspiring. Without wanting to sound melodramatic they are genuinely angels without wings. Come on guys/girls get involved.

Great thread Diddums. I'm new around here but I already see a lot of you guys are regulars here and have a little community. I am proud to be apart of it and hopefully get to know some of you lot a bit more :)

I mentioned in the OP that I'd create a team if there's enough interest, which hopefully there is. I'll update the amounts tomorrow, I'm enjoying a beer tonight before October hits :p
