Going to a christening tomorrow and my wife and I are going to be the godparents.

Not the kind of thing you can say 'no' to when you're asked by a long time friend, however I don't believe in god, nor have I ever been baptised/christened/whatever, as both my parents are atheists as well.

Aside from bursting into flame from the lord's wrath when I enter the church, am I going to hit any embarrassing moments when the vicar has a chat?

I love how "atheist" is a new buzz word for "cba" or agnostic.

What a daft thing to say.

Atheist

- noun

A person who denies or disbelieves the existence of a supreme being or beings.

It's not a buzz word, it's the correct term for someone who doesn't believe that there is a god.

Anyway, that stupid post aside, thanks for the comments - day went without a hitch and it was great. Nice church and good service (Anglican). Ok, so I had to tell some teensie white lies by stating that I believed in god and renounced all evil, but I had my fingers crossed, so it doesn't count. ;)

While the historical role of godparents may have been to look after the kids should anything happen to the parents, that isn't true today - I've no legal claim over them. The parents would need to put something in their will about fostering etc.

Still - means we get to buy birthday pressies etc (which we already did).

I think it's very wrong of you to say "yes". You're in the same position I was in a few years ago when a very good friend of mine asked Mrs. Feek and I to be godparents. If you say yes then you're a big smelly hypocrite.

If your friend is as good as you are suggesting then he/she won't be offended and will understand.

If they don't, then they're not really very good friends.

 That's your opinion, I don't place any value on it, but thanks for sharing.
