Going 8800 SLI ?

It will but the 1gb card will only use 512Mb of its 1Gb, youd be better off with the cheapest 512Mb you can get it dosent matter if they are the same brand.

The clockspeed is determined by the card in the upper slot so if you had an XXX model in the top slot and a normal one in the bottom then the bottom card would be overclocked and run at the XXX speeds and vice versa :)

Also as I can't see your spec in your sig to check - make sure you have an SLI capable motherboard.

+1 for buying another 512Mb OEM 8800GT. Asus 8800GTs are usually pretty bad for overclocking and need their own customised software to get temps and stuff :( they also don't like to be OC'd with rivatuner or ATI Tool - tho gainward's card expert utility does work.

I have toyed with SLI with 3 different card setups now.

1 - First was a pair of Gigabyte 6600GT Cards ( Thats I stil have in SLI on one of my PCs )
2 - PNY 8800GTS 320MB ( Great fun, but due to the size of the coolers, totally useless for anything else )
3 - BFG 8800Ultra OverClocked and I did this purely because... Well you just gotta!

I was going to try my 8800GT too the other week, but the second card was DOA and it annoyed me and I never got round to it.

I can honestly say that is close to being a bit of a waste of time... Games dont really play any better as such... A bit smoother perhaps, but not really any better.

I didnt know about the Clock of the topmost card, so it should be made clear about that, so I am lucky that I have always gone for 100% identical cards cos the GT I was buying the other day was a seriously quick version of the same card that I had, so lucky it was dead I suppose or it could have killed my good one!!!???

A pair of 8800 gts 320's are serving me very well at the moment, iam certainly in no rush to get the current top end cards.

I just really like the look of those two big identical cards sat in there, i just used a single one for a little while when i had MB issues and the case looked so empty.

I know its not a good way of spending money but i really like the look of a pair of identical cards ;)

Sell them and get a 4850 will probably be around on par with what you have. Its faster than a gtx which whoops a gts320 and does not rely on sli. Also atm you may just lose around 20 pound when selling them on a 4850.

SLI is pretty good technology though now....scales very well with AA

Yea but the 4 series is better with high amounts off aa. There is a review showing you that the 260 and 4870 are around equal with 4xaa but when the aa goes to 8x the 4870 leaves it behind. Any dx10.1 games that arrive will only widen this gap. For people that don't upgrade much this is a plus as nv don't have that feature yet.

I try to get the resolution as high as I can. But most games are around the 1400 X 900.

I think I will go for the cheaper 512 version.

Id keep the GT.

The 4870 is quicker than the GT, of that there is absolutely no doubt, but the difference is not ground-trembling.

By the time you sell off the GT, get what you can for it, and fork out the rest of the cash to cover the cots of the 4870, everyone will be tellign you to sell off the 4870 to get the new card thats out next week...

Id keep the GT and make the most of that unless there are games that you have, that will magically run great on the 4870 when the GT fails... If you have those games, then upgrade, but if you dont, then dont waste your money just yet.

Thats such a pathetic reason to have SLI

And its exactly the reason why I went with it myself funnily enough.

My first SLI setup was 6600GT and I went witha pair of VF700 Coolers for them, and they look cool.. I then went a bit more serious and went with the PNY 8800GTS 320MB Cards and then for a short while, I got a pair of 8800Ultra OverClocked cards purely to say that I had the fastest stock GFX setup around, but the novelty soon wore off and they are now seperated in my 2 main PCs ( As are the PNY cards ) but the 6600 Cards are still in a PC ( They need to be just to have any chance of running half the games I try in there )
