Hi all,

Just checked Vodafone and since I am going to Turkey they would like to charge me £5 per 25mb of data, which of course is extorniate, do I have any options of using a different SIM over there for photos, keeping touch with england etc?

Hi there,

I’m guessing you’re on payg? It’s not any cheaper if you’re on a contract either as I found out: £3 per MB for up to 5MB then £15 for every 5MB after.

If you do decide to get a SIM over there then you need to make sure your phone’s unlocked first to enable you to use another networks SIM.

If your phone is locked to Vodafone then you can unlock it online here.

Hope this helps.

Turkey isn't in the EU so it doesn't come under the nice roaming plans required by the European parliament. Would you consider wifi an alternative? If you roam onto Avea you appear to be able to get free wifi which is nice: http://www.avea.com.tr/web/en/RoamingInTurkey/WhyRoamingWithAvea. I tried to translate Turkcell's page but go no where :( Vodafone similar.

If you use a turkish SIM you need to register your phone (more info here) which I would imagine they will charge you for, other pages suggest this costs upto 60 TL. This right here would be a massive no for me. You're looking at something like 100TL just to register (which takes time) and get started.

Note - If you do roam on your Voda sim it will do it's absolute best to stay on Vodafone Turkey at every step of the way and you will need to manually control the network if you plan to do the Avea Wifi thing.
