Currently have my Opteron 146 running at 2.8ghz with Gskill HZ memory. Would it be worth me getting something like an opteron 170, 175 or X2 3800 or 4XXX?

I really want to stick to socket 939 and not upgrade the lot

Get a cheap opteron 165 and clock it, if you have a half decent mobo and cooling you'll hit 2.7-3ghz.

Very slight difference.

I did the same, bought a good 06xx 165 off ebay. Its at 3.06 now with 1.525 volts. Easier than upgrading the whole lot, taking the loop apart etc.

Edit: also for God's sake man its DUAL not DUEL!! :D

still £90+ for a second hand 165. what is the multi on the 165? memory is on 254mhz at the moment on 10x multi and a divider

2800mhz

9 Multi. 333 htt needed for 3ghz.
And if your mobo can't do that, get a 170, as that's got the same multi as you have now. I got mine from the bay too, they usually give you an idea of what stepping you're buying too which is nice :)

I hear the new X2 3800 are overclocking very well. For me it's either that or an Opty 165.

Or stick with my 146 and grab a new graphics card instead.

Here's a question: at 1680x1050, is upgrading the 146 going to show any difference at all, or is it all going to be gfx limited at that res?

As you can see in my sig I have an Opty 146 and I noticed worse performance in games with an AMD 4200 X2 @2750mhz, even with the dual core patch. Unless you need the X2 for encoding or multiple apps I would stick with the 144.

interesting. i was thinking on the lines of supreme commander and crysis. Whats this about a new graphics card. Surely wont the next gen games require dual core more than a top end graphics card. my overclocked x1800xt could surely handle graphics on medium/low settings

I've got an 1800XT which I always run at stock and that coupled with my Opty gives a damn good gaming experience. For instance, I know HL2 is CPU limited but how does 200FPS sound? :) For next gen games though it's going to be a bit of both I reckon.

It is up to you for sure but that was my experience. The 4200 x2 has a small cache per single core I guess but I was very disappointed and sold it on.

I went from an Opty 148 @2.9Ghz to a 165 @2.9Ghz. The performance increase and additional smoothness of dual core were well worth the upgrade.

interesting. Whats the rest of your setup?

I hear most people saying that going duel core isnt really worth it from single same speed (unless encoding and such)

I'd go for it. Lucky dip with the X2 3800's and the Opteron's have been more solid throughout but there's still a few duds in Opterons bins so it's a lucky pick unless you research a stepping and purchase second hand. As you see my X2 has gotten me quite far from stock with a possible 3Ghz when/if I add watercooling.

I recently purchased a 3700+ AMD San Diego 939 cpu from USA second hand for a second system which runs at 2.95Ghz @ 1.55v and I had it in this PC for about 2 months as I lent my X2 to a m8 so he would finally upgrade his clawhammer FX55. He went and got a Conroe setup with 8800GTX. Anyhow in the time I spent with the single core again I noticed the lack of power. With the single core things like Par2 checker and other CPU related tasks that newsgroups bring just put the cpu @ 100% and other tasks were just slow and not responding well. With the dual core you have 100% just about at everytime out of the 200% unless the software is multi-threaded. It just means there is always another cpu when certain programs lock up to help you ease through the process of closing the buggy program down.

I've had 2 problems with games and I play a LOT of games on my machine. The only ones effected were NHL 06 and Godfather. Just had to put affinity to one core and the problem vanished. 2 seconds and sorted ;).

I don't think dual core has helped me in many games but it certainly hasn't taken anything away from them and I always have that extra power there 24/7. Also Company of Heroes asked me if I had the AMD Dual Core Optimizer patch installed which I hadn't due to a reinstall of XP recently so I don't know if certain games are taking advantage. I should've checked but I'm just being lazy. It worked well before the install and continued to do so after so I'm not sure.

So from going to single core to dual core then back to single core again then finally back to my dual core has showed me the difference and personally I would deffo do it. Go and get X2 or Opteron and overclock the snot out of it. http://www.extremeoverclocking.com/ <-- Great site and also has for sale section for second hand. If this is seen as a competitor then I will remove it immediately.

So Geeza. Did my big talk put you off and only just this morning did you go and buy a set of golf clubs and thought to yourself "Sod this PC crap?". :D You never know. Had to ask :p .

nah, but i do need some new irons but im not playing at all really now.

I was very tempted to get an *extreme overclockable* opteron 165 on ebay last night for about £85 (it went for £85inc) but seems as ive lost my phone last sat and theres no sign of it being delivered as they said they would i passed on bidding on it.

Maybe when i get my phone sorted and some money ill get one
