Going from a 360 to a PS3

and the point is that on PS3 they can at no cost at all. my wife and kids want to get there own trophies for the games they play, they could not do that on 360.

Yes they could..

It's free to set up a gamer profile, and even to upgrade it to a silver account... You don't have to pay money to get achievements or play games. You only have to pay for a gold subscription if you want to play online across the Xbox Live service.

You need to find out about both consoles, and what you can and can't do with them before whinging about them like a little fanboy.

As for PS3 versions, from memory (in the UK) there are:

- 60GB Release Version (backward compatible, 4 usb ports, memory card reader, SACD playback). No longer made

- 40GB Version - 2 usb ports, not backward compatible, no memory card reader, no SACD playback. No longer made

- 80GB Version - replaced the 40GB. Same features but larger hard drive

- 160GB Version - additional version. Same features as the 40 and 80GB versions

Thanks for that very informative reply. What connections do these have?

You would be surprised how many people would be swayed by that measly £25 a year fee, me being one of them!

Spending an extra £100+ on a console because it costs £25 per year for Live doesn't make much sense. It's like all these folk getting rid of their £60k BMWs because the road tax is going up by £200 a year

I want a blu ray player and a games console thats reliable, makes perfect sense to me!:)

Fellas, don't turn this in to a 360 vs PS3 fanboy debate, all I wanted was opinions on what my options were.

Thanks ajgoodfellow, I can have the PS3 in HDMI and the 360 in VGA. Sorted :)

If people want to debate the merits of either console, they are perfectly entitled to. That's the nature of discussion forums - conversations develop and evolve away from the original topic.

360 f t w lulz

Pah! Reliability! Ain't all its cracked up to be :D

In the interests of fairness, I think the new 360s are pretty much RROD-proof due to manufacturing improvements. I'm not a 360 fanboy btw - I've been consoleless for a good 9 months and have just picked up a 360 Arcade for £87 :). I'd probably of gone for a PS3 if it was anywhere near that price!

I would say the only real big difference between them is blu ray! In my honest opinion if the 360 had a blu ray player and better reliability that would have swayed me.

Compare the reliability to the ps3 boy what a difference:p.

My wife-to-be looks aghast every time I suggest replacing our DVD player with a Bluray one.... I think she'd kill me if I bought a PS3 :D

Strangely enough my 60gb ps3 died pretty much after a years use so reliability on both consoles is pretty ****e TBH. and when I got it back from Sony it died again so woo hoo, but I cant fault the service they have been very good, brand new 80gb version Thursday swap over:cool:

I know Yungster as a friend and he is not a Sony fanboy by any stretch of your imagination.
For a start he owns all the consoles and not just this generations three.
If you were to check back on these forums you will see that nearly all the time he will say that in his opinion that the 360 is the better console for gaming either online or off.
To be honest he spends more time playing on the 360 and his Ps3 is not used very often.
Go on to xbox live and look at his gamer score if you want proof of that.
To the OP i would also say keep your 360 and get a PS3 as well.

I can't believe people still waffle on about this. Xbox live for £25 a year is absolutely **** all. It's such a minuscule cost it makes barely any difference that the opposition does the same thing for free.

your right, LIVE does not cost much a year, but it is a cost you don't pay on PS3.

at £25 a year it would cost the family £125. it then becomes more than **** all.

You pay for Live because it is a better service. I don't think most people have an issue paying £30 a year for such a good service.

i use 360 and PS3 all the time, i play on LIVE or PSN and they both work. explain "better" to me.

What I was meaning about "not an issue" is that if you all wanted your own usernames - why should you expect MS to give away subscriptions? You really don't need your own username - could easily create a XYZ_Family account and just use that.

you do need your own user name if you want to get the most from the games and speak to or message your own friends.

Yes they could..

on our 360, each account cost's to get online for online achievements. it is nice that you have found out about both consoles and can get online achievements with a silver account, can you tell me how to do this, or is yours just a clueless fanboy rant?

It wouldn't cost £125 a year unless you want 5 distinct accounts! You DO NOT NEED 5 accounts to play online. You only need one. If you choose (knowing full well the implications) to give every family member their own gold account (which frankly is absurd), then it's your choice to pay £125 a year.

you do need your own user name if you want to get the most from the games and speak to or message your own friends.

If you care so much about achievements etc, then yes, you have to pay. Again, entirely your choice. There are alternatives. Microsoft isn't forcing you to hand over cash.

That's the thing. More people playing more games.

i find this a bizarre comment? How do you know? Is live one massive common room? uhmm no its not - the voice chat and party system makes it more community-based but Home easily comes into that arena and seems to do all that except better.

And for all the proliferation of headsets on xbox live - the bad outweighs the good by an enormous amount. So you end up turning down the volume totally or switching off the headset.

My whole point is xbox live supplies all of these features in all games as its part of live whereas on the PS3 its down to the developers to provide it.

You might have a point there but i prefer it the way Sony have done it tbh. Its not that big a deal.

Cross-game voice chat would be nice i guess but i wouldn't categorize it as a major feature for me.

You pay for Live because it is a better service. I don't think most people have an issue paying £30 a year for such a good service.

???? Again i find this bizarre, something which is free and commonplace on PC and you can do most of the same things on PS3 but to which you and others are saying its a good service so you dont mind paying for?

I just dont see what "service" it is that MS are providing which is so good.

Also i much prefer PSN for downloading demos etc. Its quicker and easier to navigate. When you download stuff does it measure how much % of it has downloaded on 360? Last time i looked it didnt..ps3 does. Little things.

I'm not saying anything's bad just the price isnt worth it for me.

Yes, and it has done for as long as I can remember.
