Makes a lot of sense, more or less twice the performance and double the VRAM wil help out loads!!

Im waiting out for the next refresh before upgrading. I also have the 680 and like you say plays everything just fine.

If everything plays well now why don't you just wait? If The Witcher 3 runs well you might not even need to upgrade.

The 970 is a big jump up and the VRAM will help too but I don't think a 680 will struggle at 1080p for a while, even a 660Ti will play at 1080p on "high" settings.
I suspect/hope that the 970 will eventually find its home at the £220-£230 price point once AMD finally make their move.
The true value of a 970 will show itself once the full-fat next gen games finally come in 2015, especially when it comes to VRAM requirements.
