Wow what a difference, just sold my ultra to get some dfunds for the 3870x2. Happen to have a spare 2900 and its suprising the framerate difference between the two. Even on games like tf2 i was averaging with 4xfsaa about 65-70fps minimum on the ultra with the same settings on the 2900 most of the time the average is around 55 and the max rarely clocks into the 90's.

Cod4 sp also seems to crucify this card @ 1920x1200

I went from a clocked 8800GTX to a 2900XT - performance hit was quite noticeable so i got another XT to crossfire. That was OK performance wise but heat output and leccy bills said no so i downgraded to a single HD3850pro 256mb.

The GTX is easily the best card i've ever had! I would imagine the Ultra is somewhat impressive also!

Yea even with my 8800GT coming from an 2900XT the difference is quite large, for instance in TF2 16xAA was not playable really with the 2900XT, now it just belts along with the 8800GT @ 1680x1050 :D.

The OP realises he's talking about a card a little under twice the price of the 2900XT right??

At the time I bought my 2900XT the Ultra was around 85% more expensive yet you're talking about a performance boost of 20%. Personally I think that's absolutely fabulous from the 2900XT. Same when stacked against the GTX. The GTX and ultra are both better cards but you really paid for the small performance boost.

As for the 8800GT now that's a quality card for the price. If I was going for a card now it'd be a tough choice between that and a 3870.

I think hes simply pointing out that atis highend parts dont compete with nvidias.

And he is simply pointing out that price per performance it's not really that bad. Now if the 2900XT was priced the same then yes, the Ultra would deserve a pat on the back. But it isn't and I agree that a card 85% cheaper with nowhere near 85% of a difference in power speaks volumes.

At the time though you could get a 2900XT for like £220 and the GTX's were about £290 to £350 and I think the performance difference would be a lot bigger than 20%, I'm sure its more than that for my 2900XT to 8800GT if not I would not have being happy tbh.

Of course you would see a difference, the Ultra is in a different league to the 2900, it destroys it, you wanna knock the AA off as thats what crucifies em. :p

Considering this generation ive owned the following:

8800gts 640
2900xt512
superclocked evga gtx
dual 1gig 2900xt's
evga 8800 ultra

Yes i think i know what im comparing :) The whole point of my post was my suprise of just how much the 2900 lags behind the ultra, its one thing to read it in reviews, to experience it first hand is something else. I considered TF2 a pretty undemanding game untill i played it with the 2900.

I play with 12x narrow tent AA on my 3850 and get about 80fps min @ 1440x900....almost always above 100

Quite a bit different from 1920x1200 though ;)

People just needed reminding :).
basicly just to put the 2900 down again...

some people are two faced tbh. because some people have gone from a 2900 to a 3870 which as the same performance but they still are all over the 3870...

i agree its less power and heat but only that..

we already know it's slower than the ultra... its old news...

Im talking about experiencing it first hand not some review that people call bs on. The threads not intended to be insulting to the card obviously their price ranges differ quite a bit. The thing that gets me is going from the 2900 to the gtx originally i didn't see a massive jump more of a modest one. After having used the ulta for 3 or so months its apparent now the speed differences were more than id originally thought.

Can a mod lock this as its going the usual way..
