Going out in Brixton!

Last time I was in Brixton I almost got blown up by a nail bomb, I had just walked passed & was just around the corner (which was actually planted by a white dude!) - take that stereotyping!.

(not that I'm making the place sound safe or good at all though mind).

I feel Tom Sizemore's advice during the landing craft scene in Saving Private Ryan would be apt here:

"Remember, don't bunch! One man, waste of ammo! Five men, golden opportunity!"

What was the other advice? Something like "keep running, if you lie down you are dead".
And "don't stop to help with the fallen, just keep running".

Sounds like a nice night out really,
but then Zulu is one of my top ten films.

Only time I have been out in Brixton is when we used to go to events held at the Fridge club back in the day, and Brixton academy.

+1 (and 414). Recently I have been to quite a few events in Brixton at various venues and I have never had a problem. As others have said don't act like a tourist, ignore most people when they try talk to you selling drugs or asking for money and you will be fine.

Used to be a weekly regular at 414 on Coldharbour Lane for about 8 years, The Fridge before it got in to Triads and the Academy for HHH and never had any issues ever in Brixton. A few scagheads at 4am wanting money and don't forget 5p man !! He was legendary although he lost some credibility when he started dropping his rates to 1 and 2p's !! Several decent pubs around and places to eat.

If you walk around like you live there then you'll get no grief, if you look like a tourist and all scared as hell then of course you might become a victim !

I was visiting a mate in London and at the time my favourite band were playing at Brixton academy, all my family members said no and that basically as I'm white, I shouldn't go. (I don't mean to be racist at all).

Have your family ever been to Brixton? I can't say I've had many nights out in Brixton but it's not uncommon for me to have to stop there to get a night bus back home and it's no better or worse than most other areas of London.

I am told its better now then back in the days, though I still remember my first visit there over the weekend, lost count how many times I heard the sirens in the evening xD.
(might have been next to a hospital for all I know)

Haven't been back since.

My grandparents lived just up the road from Brixton. In Stockwell to be precise. They were burgled 11 times over a space of 15yrs. Now imagine trying to keep nice belongings in your home, when you've been burgled that many times.

Yes it has a vibe it's London after all, providing you don't attract the attention of one of its many inhabitants, who have no ambition, and who's life of crime is all they know. (white or black!) Not saying everyone there is bad, just a larger percentage of crime than anywhere else. You could get lucky and not be affected by it. Probabilities and statistics do eventually find their way to you though.

It's a popular request of Police who are looking for some action, to be stationed at Brixton.

You get burgled everywhere in London. I've been hit here in E1, but my family home (prior to us moving into it) had been burgled 3-4 times... and that's in leafy suburban Hampton. Yet I have a number of friends in Brixton and the surrounding areas that have had no problem with at all.

Quite surprised by this thread to be honest! Brixton is fine. You act like an idiot and there may be some trouble, but that applies to almost everywhere in central-ish London.

After many years of coming home late at night from there, never have I had any issues at all.

Have you seen the size of yourself?

But seriously Brixton is a great laugh for a night out.

I did have a pound stolen from me by a man scamming asking for change for 2 50ps for a pound (or some variation on that). He took my pound and then asked if I wanted to fight him for a quid. No thanks, enjoy your pounds and on my merry way I went.

Helped a mate do a lightshow at a club in Brixton about 15 years ago (101 club if I remember right - or was it 414, i might be getting confused!).

Between unloading the gear out of a van at the kerb side right out the front door, and carrying it through the door about 8 feet away, I was invited to buy smack by four different dealers. Doormen wouldn't let the dealers in the club but weren't making any fuss about them working right outside the front door.

It was a cracking night out though.

Anybody would think that this place was a war torn part of the world :p

Soooo many worse places in the UK and in London. However, I'm loving some of the posts! :D

Half of these people are from outside London telling Londoners how dangerous it is.
