Going out in Brixton!

I was visiting a mate in London and at the time my favourite band were playing at Brixton academy, all my family members said no and that basically as I'm white, I shouldn't go. (I don't mean to be racist at all).
 
Brixton is fine, just don't go off the main road drunk, acting like a tourist,

a lot of good pubs there, and of course the Brixton academy,

on a side not, im going to see sound garden there soon :cool:
 
Brixton isn't a war zone. Go ahead.

Most of London is synonymous with crime, being a city and all.
 
I went out in Herne Hill a month or two back, got the tube to/from Brixton, it seemed fine to me.

Only reason Brixton is synonymous with crime to me is because of the famous prison.

Nothing to do with all the black people there then?

I've been there at night once on my own to see a band :eek:
I wouldn't go back, not even to see an 18 year old Kate Bush dance naked on stage.

Brixton is statistically the most dangerous place in the UK. Does that mean you'll get stabbed if you go out there for a night out. Probably not. Does it mean you have a higher chance of getting stabbed then anywhere else in the country? YES !

Anyway this should cover everything..

Bus stops – keep your personal belongings close to you and valuables out of sight in busy streets.
Phones - don't use a mobile phone close to a railway or underground station. Be aware of who's around you and avoid making unnecessary calls.
Bags - wear shoulder bags across your body so that they open on the side facing you. Don't leave your bag open or carry it over one shoulder.
Wallet and keys- never keep your wallet in your back pocket. Keep it out of sight in an inside jacket pocket. Carry your keys in your pocket, separate from your other belongings.
Cash - don't carry large amounts of cash with you and be aware of your surroundings when using a cash point machine on the street.
Jewellery - avoid wearing expensive (or expensive looking) jewellery on show. Keep it concealed when in public places.
Tickets - don't buy tickets from ticket touts as this can fuel the local drugs market.
Routes - always know where you are going and plan your route in advance. Avoid short cuts and try to keep to main roads.
Personal alarms - you could consider carrying a personal attack alarm.
Reporting – if you are a victim or witness to a crime, report it to the police (999) in an emergency or Crimestoppers (0800 555 111).

Good god, are you kidding me? Not all black people are going to chop you up with knives and meat cleavers! Brixton is a good night out and is perfectly safe. End of thread.

Your loss . Been there loads of times over the years to go to both the Academy and for a night out and never seen any trouble. Your family are the type of people that increase racial tension without having a clue what they are talking about.
 
A friend and I went to a club near Finsbury Park. Fairly quiet night, maybe 40 people in there. We were the only two white ones. I've never felt less welcome. We weren't stabbed.

I won't be going to Brixton.
 
You'll be fine. Brixton might not be the most scenic of places but it's hardly South Central. Just expect to get offered drugs within two minutes of exiting the tube station.

i wouldnt go out there but i spend a lot of time in peckham so trololol...
just dont act like a middle class sap in a AJ Hackett polo shirt and you wont get mugged.

Brixton is an awesome night out. When I moved to the UK we lived in Dulwich which isn't far from Brixton and spent most of my teenage and early 20s out there.

It's got a lot of character and a good vibe.

Better than a lot of other areas of London IMO.

After many years of coming home late at night from there, never have I had any issues at all.

Soooo many worse places in the UK and in London. However, I'm loving some of the posts! :D
 
Only time I have been out in Brixton is when we used to go to events held at the Fridge club back in the day, and Brixton academy.
 
There's nothing wrong with Brixton. Like with anywhere though, if you start trouble, you'll get trouble.
