I have a q6600 not overclocked, which runs at 2.4Ghz. I need to go over 3Ghz to edit movies, what's the best route, eg E8400 dual core, Q9XXX quad core, overclock my existing Q6600?

Definately overclock the Q6600, you should be able to get 3.0GHz pretty easily and even on the stock cooling if I remember right. But I was you, get a decent cooler like this and overclock it to 3.5GHz :)

You can easily get that Q6600 to 3GHz very easily. Upping the fsb would do the trick since almost all Q6600 should do the trick nicely. If the rest of the system is decent then it wouldn't require upping the voltage.

I am running my [email protected] 24/7 and it is a very stable system. Also downloading CPU-Z would be a nice idea to check out with version of the Q6600 you have. The G0 variant is better than the first one since it runs cooler and overclockers better.

Can you post full system specs ?
That would really help to make a more informed decission.

My Q6600 wont overclock in a MSI 750i P7N SLI Platinum for some reason.

I had mine on 3.2 using a freezer 7, now 3.6 using tuniq 120.
To get to 3.0 all u need to do is change the fsb to 333, stock volts & even stock cooling should cope ok with that, I would rather change the heatsink but if you are strapped for cash stock should just about do.

your replies have been very helpful and very economical, thanks. I'll will post the results when I do the deed.
