Going to bite the 980ti bullet - G1 vs. MSI

Hi all - what are your thoughts on this? My sense is that the MSI is more popular; however, the G1 is faster. Any reason for this preference for MSI over G1?

I've got the MSI 6G and I cannot fault it. Quick out the box, fans wont kick in until the card is pushed or the temp hits 60c and quiet as anything...superb card!

the g1 seems to have more reports of coil whine. i'm basing this purely on reports from people who've bought them on forums like this. The ones without coil whine seem to be really solid

Are you going for absolute maximum speed you can get out of the card or do you just want it to work?

G1 Gaming is an absolute beast, it costs slightly more generally (not too sure on current prices), but you can't go wrong with the 6G - Fast out of the box and very quiet.

If you're not going to overclock, go for the MSI.
It's quieter and it's less risky to get one that whines (only problem is the cooler is not very efficient as they kept the same from the 980, so extra overclocks might get the card too hot - compared to the cooler G1).

I intend to hit 1500 on the core for GTA5 and Witcher 3 at 3440x1440 @ 60fps. Or better put - minimise the number of dips below 60.

Then I'll be upgrading in about 18 months to Pascal full fat which doesn't need an overclock..

The coil whine is a concern - are RMA's based on this reason valid?

Just for info, I've just switched to 3440x1440 (from 2560) and I can't *absolutely* max out GTA5 like I could with the 2560x1440 settings but I didn't have to turn down much :)

(I run at 1500core)

My msi isn't a great clocker, (1489mhz max). But the beauty is you can set the fans quite high and its still very quiet. 80% on the msi is much quieter than 60% on the windforce 780's I had.

I am currently running at 3440x1440, with Grass turned down to high and 4x MSAA I was running at around 45-50 FPS which is what I would call acceptable (GTA:V), my card doesn't struggle with anything at this resolution, really - Boosts to 1410MHz just for reference.

Edit: My definition of struggling is probably way different to most people's, but 50FPS+ is what I consider a nice experience.

See I find that way too low the lowest I would go on that res with the x34 allowing for 100hz is 70 with g sync it starts to feel quite laggy below that

I can't miss something I have never used - I'm sure if I had used 144Hz panels in the past I would not consider 50FPS good

Edit: It also depends on whether you would be fine playing on high, or whether you want to play on ultra - playing on high meant my 980Ti ran just fine at 2160p, but playing on Ultra and MSAA turned up means I struggle to get the same sort of frame rates at 3440x1440.

I wouldn't say a single 980Ti is a bad choice to pair with a 3440x1440 monitor in all honesty - two would obviously be better, but one is not a bad choice at all.

you need to try it I've tried all sort of screen techs and i find high refresh over high res as far as games go but they need to be 2560x1440 otherwise to pixelated on a 27" screen and 24" is too small for me i did want the x34 but the thought of an extra 500 over the screen i got and another titan X to ensure it worked smoothly wasnt worth it in my eyes.

ill wait till they have a va or amhva what ever that benq 35" is, ips glows to much for my liking. then wait for a penel that does 3440@144hz and what ever gpus will run it
