So, in a couple of weeks I'm off to croatia. I didn't really want to go but it's the last chance I can go on holiday with my rents before I'm off to uni. Since they decided it's a nice place to photograph, and also my birthday, I will be able to accesorise my DSLR.

So, what should I be buying?

Tripod is what I was going to choose first off.

Maybe some filters? I would like to do long exposures of the water during the day which requires filters? (I think)

I could probably stretch to a new lens if it's fairly cheap.

Currently just got a 350D and a kit 18 - 55 lense.

I guess the majority of stuff in croatia will be landscape and building related. So I need a really wide lense for that?

Cheers,
Ash

OK after looking around. I think I'm going to get:

Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 (On Raymond Lin's recommendation and also various internet reviews)

Another Sandisk extreme iii CF card

A tripod of some discription. Not sure if I can stretch to the expense of manfrotto yet.

Also maybes a hoya R72 filter if the 350D can handle IR.

Anyone got any images taken with the above lense? Would appreciate it if you posted them :)

Thanks,
Ash

I was just going to reccommend the Hoya R72, if you get that you will also need a tripod as IR shots require long exposures.

Perhaps a big zoom lens would be more useful for landscapes/large areas, like maybe a Sigma 70-300m, I think they can be picked up for around £200.

I was looking at the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro.
It seemed pretty interesting as it had macro functionality aswell as the large range.
Can be had for £150 brand new aswell. So it is VERY tempting.

Anyone have this lense?

Also, is the filter size 58mm?

Thanks,
Ash

I am using the non APO version as a tempory solution unitil my 'major purchase' is purchased. not the greatest lens, bit blurry, vignetting is quite bad. took this picture with it.

that was at something like f16 and 1/320 or 250. at 300mm f5.6 it is quite awfull.

APO version is significantly better, it's not a bad lens at all for the money, I was happy with mine until i spent loads of money on something new...
