Going to install win xp pro (again)

I've usually just stuck the disc in lads and lasses and done a basic instal with no partition size etc but I've decided to do a clean install and partition my drives as I've been told this improves performance.

I have a wee 160 gig hard drive and would like to know what size of partition I should create when doing my install. Are there any other details you need to know before offering me any advice?

for xp i would say 60gig would be fine but it depends on how many progs and games u install

To be honest I hardly play games on the pc and the applications I would install are just antivirus,spyware etc.
I was gonna install BF2 again (not played that for ages) and the odd flight sim so I wasn't sure if I should create a seperate partition for games etc.

I have 2 gig of ram if that makes any difference too.

if u cud nick a stick of RAM of a mate it'll make a slight diff but apart from that erm what is the rest of your spec?

I've got an AMD Athlon 64 3700 (SanDiago I think it is) processor (2.4ghz) with the 2gb of RAM, 160gb hard drive, Audigy 2 zs sound card and an old 7800 GTX graphics card all stuck on to an Asus A8N SLI premium m/b.

Just found my old W/D 250gb external hard drive too but my pc isn't recognising it for some reason

The only improvement putting your OS on a small partition on the same physical device does is speed up maintenance tasks. (error checks, defrag).

Splitting a physical drive into partitions does not increase performance. It will actually slow you down. Albeit only by a small degree.

You've been listening to bad advice.

im sorry but there was no mention of it increasing speeds at.

i advised him to get more ram

anyways he may not have to partition it now he has found a 250Gb HDD
